Cobleskill-Richmondville Central School has named its top two students for the Class of 2025.
Sophia Ruenes has been recognized as valedictorian, with Brynn Crewell earning the title of salutatorian, according to a news release from the district. Ruenes is the daughter of Wanda and Anthony Ruenes and Crewell is the daughter of Jamie and John Crewell.
Ruenes served as class president for all four years of high school. She was also president of the National Honor Society, treasurer of the Spanish Honor Society, and an active member of Youth As Leaders, Stage Crew, Yearbook Club, Student Council and Varsity Club. She has also been a passionate artist, designing the CRCS yearbook cover for three consecutive years and having her artwork featured in local galleries.
She organized and led countless school events, including the winter ball, prom, senior sunrise, Hispanic Heritage Month fundraisers, a schoolwide outdoor movie night and “Students vs. Teachers Pep Rally,” a senior-sponsored event she helped create. Outside the classroom, she finds joy in painting, playing the piano, baking, and spending time with her family.
After graduation, she plans to pursue a career in the medical field, aiming to make a difference through healthcare.
Salutatorian Crewell pointed to her family as the foundation of her achievements, particularly her mother and the memory of her late grandfather.
A multitalented student, Crewell faced and conquered personal challenges, including severe medical obstacles and stage fright, even while performing as the lead in the school musical, the release stated. She has held lead roles in the spring musical each year, finding freedom in character work and music. She’s also served as Drama Club secretary, Select Choir treasurer, and performed in All County Choir. She describes acting and singing as her creative outlet and emotional anchor.
She has been President of Odyssey of the Mind since freshman year, leading her team to two World Finals appearances, placing 15th and 10th globally. She also served in FBLA as parliamentarian and treasurer, placing top three in the state across three events and qualifying for nationals. She is a member of the National, Spanish and French honor societies, and serves on the Teen Advisory Board for her local library. She played varsity volleyball and track and was in the Strike Valley Volleyball Club throughout high school.
In the fall, she will attend Russell Sage College, pursuing a degree in forensic psychology.
