CHAZY — Every team focuses on the next game on the schedule, but one could tell these teams had this game circled on the calendar.
In what felt like a playoff preview, with a playoff atmosphere, Chazy pulled away from Bolton, winning 48-22 in MVAC action, Thursday.
Bolton is a really young team and very well coached,” Chazy coach Josh Howell said. “Coach Schweikert is doing a great job and his girls played us really physically tonight.
“Tonight was a playoff atmosphere and I’m sure the players from both teams had some nerves as neither team could get much going offensively in the first half.”
Both teams struggled from the field early as the lead going into the break was 14-10 at the break. After the nerves settled the buckets began to fall and Chazy found its groove.
Carly LaPierre was a force for the Eagles on the inside. She easily recorded a double-double with a game high 15 points and numerous rebounds.
She was the center of Chazy’s 2-3 zone and was there when the ball bounced off the rim to get an outlet pass to a teammate to move up the court.
Many of her buckets came on second, sometimes third, chance opportunities.
Kassidy Turek nailed two of Chazy’s four threes, and was second on the team with nine points.
The Eagle defense clamped down whenever a Bolton player entered the paint, and were able to get a hand in the face on a three-point attempt.
“Tonight was really about our team defense which we have been emphasizing more in practice,” Howell said. “I’m just so proud of the girls tonight because the defensive intensity and effort was there from start to finish.”
Jadynn Egloff led Bolton with 11 points. No other player got above six points for the visitor.
With the win, Chazy improves to 10-3 overall and 8-0 in the MVAC. Bolton suffers its second loss of the season, standing at 11-2 and 7-2 in the conference.
If the night was any indication, these teams will be meeting again in sectionals.
“We have such a good balance on offense and continue to play defense with the same intensity and effort as tonight, we got a really capable team that should compete for a championship,” Howell said.
