CUMBERLAND — The Allegany County Museum, in conjunction with the Jane Gates Heritage House, will screen the “Finding Your Roots” episode featuring the story of Jane Gates on April 26 at 2:30 p.m.
Gates is the great-grandmother of Henry Louis Gates Jr. and John Gates, a local resident of Cumberland and vice president of the Jane Gates Heritage House.
Following the screening, guests will have the opportunity to participate in a livestreamed interactive discussion with Henry Louis Gates Jr., a historian, literary scholar and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, best known as the host of “Finding Your Roots” on PBS.
He will be joined by CeCe Moore, a world-renowned geneticist and leading expert in using DNA for ancestry and forensic investigations.
Together, they will share insights into genealogy, genetic research and African American heritage.
Seating is limited to 100 guests, with tickets available for $30 per person.
Tickets must be purchased in advance by visiting the Allegany Museum Facebook event page and clicking the ticket link.
Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Jane Gates Heritage House, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving African American history in our community.
Guests can submit questions to Dr. Gates and Moore when they buy their tickets. Selected questions will be answered during the event.
