BOYS SKIING
St. John’s Prep takes two: The defending state champion Eagles opened the 2025 season in style at Bradford Ski Area, taking down both Hamilton-Wenham and Andover by identical 112-23 scores. Josh Haarmann was the first place finisher on the day for SJP, racing to a winning time of 20.83 seconds. He was followed by teammate Sam Charette (21.25), who was third overall. Other Eagles with strong showings on the slopes included Owen McLain (21.75), Colton Friedlander (21.78) and Aidan Rogers (21.79).
Manchester Essex 87, Hamilton-Wenham 48: Cooper Bousum had an excellent showing for the Generals, winning the race in a time of 21.63 and finishing sixth overall among all skiers at Bradford. Will Totten finished second for H-W (23.01), followed by Brady Lannon (26.07).
Masconomet splits: Junior captain David Palmer, who flew down the mountain in 21.63 seconds, won the race in the Chieftains’ 89-46 victory over Haverhill and was third overall in an 89.5-49.5 setback to Newburyport. Ethan Daly, a senior captain, also had a good day on the slopes in 22.48, as did junior Tyler Durgan in 22.89.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Danvers 60, Salem 9: Making her first varsity start, senior Gianna Ferraro scored six points while grabbing six rebounds, dishing out four assists and making three steals for the victorious Falcons. All told, 10 of 11 players scored for Danvers in the win, including Annabel Boyd (12 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, 4 steals), Jane Koulopoulos (12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers) and Sienna Lynch (5 points, 3 assists).
Masconomet 51, Saugus 40: Angie Lalikos finished with a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds while Shaye Vella also scored 13 points and hauled down five boards to power the league-leading Chieftains to victory. Ava Allen added nine points while Riley Bovardi was an all-around standout with seven steals, five points, four assists and four rebounds.
Winthrop 49, Peabody 45: The Tanners were playing for the third time in four days and ultimately came up short in this Northeastern Conference clash. Ally Bettencourt led the offense with 14 points and Avery Bettencourt was also in double figures with 10.
Bishop Feehan 63, Bishop Fenwick 51: Team defense and an excellent compete level were there for Fenwick (4-3), but enough shots didn’t fall to pull out a league win. Junior captains Celia Neilson (25 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds) and Caitlin Boyle (19 points, 6 rebounds) led the way for the Crusaders, who host Masconomet Sunday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Peabody 61, Winthrop 36: Jariel Tolentino scored a game-best 22 points and freshman Thad Broughton added 11 points, seven rebounds and six assists to propel the Tanners to their fifth win in eight games thus far. Marc Mendonca (8 points), Jimmy Festa (6 points, 7 rebounds), Justin Pais (8 assists, 5 rebounds) and Stephen Brown (6 points) helped round out a true team effort for Peabody.
Masconomet 96, Saugus 57: Scoring at will both inside and from around the perimeter, the Chieftains got 19 points (and 4 three-pointers) from Devin O’Brien in its runaway win. Sophomore Thomas Denton (12 points) stole a pass at halfcourt and threw down a two-handed dunk as a game highlight, with guard Jimmy Farrell adding 14 points, Colin Doherty 11 off the bench (including a trio of trifectas), and Hunter Rossi 10. Ryan Richardson was also a defensive demon for the winners.
Gloucester 77, Beverly 73: Despite a season high 35 points from junior captain Jacob Klass, the Panthers were upset on the road.
Swampscott 79, Marblehead 63: Connor Chiarello scored 28 points to pace the Big Blue (now 6-1) past their arch rivals. Teddy O’Neill added 19 points in the win, Chase Groothuis finished with 11, and Michael Lutko and Adam Sparacio each contributed eight.
Bishop Feehan 80, Bishop Fenwick 48: The Crusaders were led offensively by Dom Torres’ 15 points, with teammate Vince Finnochio adding eight.
BOYS TRACK
Marblehead 44.5, Masconomet 42.5: The Chieftains had four individual winners in Colin Moran (hurdles), Adam Staffier (300), Tyson Arnold (600) and Arbor Halilaj (shot put). In addition, Halilaj, Timmy Lull, Nicco Cefalo and Staffier won the 4×400 relay.
