FIELD HOCKEY
Marblehead 3, Danvers 2: Ava Salem’s goal with a little over two minutes to play gave the Magicians an upset victory over the defending Northeastern Conference champions. Avrey Black scored off a corner and Savannah Caruso added a second period tally to tie the game for MHS. Keliane Salem and Caruso earned assists and goaltender Maggie Beauchesne stopped 10 shots to claim the win in net.
Danvers (now 0-2) got goals from captain Emma Cross (from Kyla Moroney) and Addie Moore scored her first career goal (from Cross) to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. Goalkeeper Grace McLaughlin finished with five saves.
Masconomet 3, Gloucester 2: Mia Juliano scored a pair of goals and Mia Marques had the other while assisting on both of Juliano’s to give the Chieftains (1-1) a win in their conference opener. Delaney Ogden added an assist for the Tri-Town squad, with Alana Vaz playing very well and goalie Sabrina Cafarelli stopping seven shots.
Swampscott 5, Saugus 1: Lila Giard led the Big Blue offensively with two goals and a helper while goalie Lilah Caplan stopped five shots to help her team improve to 1-1. Maisie Russo added a goal and one assist; Audrey Heath and Olivia Quagrello also scored; Sofia Robledo Puch had two assists, and teammate Meg Baran added one.
GOLF
Essex Tech 194, Lynnfield 193: The Hawks shaded the Pioneers at home as Colin Murray led the way with 38 points. Every point in the match counted with Andrew McKenna delivering 35, Aidan Rotondo providing 34 and Cody Thibodeau, Jake Swenicki and freshman Ryan Skerry all scoring 29.
Hamilton-Wenham 170, Ipswich 135: Cam McIntosh picked up 33 points while teammates Reid Faldo and Trent Murizc both had 29 to give the Generals the decision at Ipswich CC. Liam Berrigan and Cooper Miller picked up 27 points apiece as Hamilton-Wenham improved to 2-0.
For the Tigers Grant Bowser had 26 points, Connor Wright scored 24, James Norris had 23, Louis Harrington notched 22 and Charlie Pezza had 20.
Beverly 43.5, Masconomet 28.5: Taking wins in seven of the eight spots, the Panthers improved to 3-0 with the triumph at Ferncroft. Will Ryan (5.5-3.5), Anthony Barror (5.5-3.5), Lucas Carbone (6.5-2.5), Henry Robinson (6-3), Drew Murphy (5.5-3.5), Thomas Simeone (6.5-2.5) and Nathan Wheeler (5-4) were all victorious for the Orange-and-Black.
No. 7 player Blake Ditchfield picked up a 6-3 win for Masconomet, shooting 40 on the par-36 tract.
Austin Prep 54, Marblehead 36: James Bickell was the medalist at Bear Hill for Marblehead, carding a 38 and winning his match 5.5-3.5. Greyson Leventhal (6.5-2.5) and Will Macrina (5.5-3.5) also won for the Magicians (2-2).
Winthrop 39, Swampscott 33: Winners for the Big Blue (1-2) were Sam Moscoso and Jack Smyth while Tyler Ostroff managed to tie his matchup.
VOLLEYBALL
Ipswich 3, Lynnfield 2: The three-time defending Division 4 state champions held off a gritty Lynnfield squad to prevail, 25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 20-25, 15-11, in its season opener under new head coach Brian Reed. Claire Buletza finished with 20 kills, 17 digs and three service aces for the winners, with Addison Pillis adding 14 kills. Emily Hannibal finished with a dozen digs; Alex Marino had 41 assists; Frannie Hertz contributed three serving aces and three blocks; and Avery Brown also blocked three shots.
Bishop Fenwick 3, Essex Tech 0: A well rounded effort enabled the Crusaders to sweep, 25-14, 25-20, 25-23. Calli Symond finished with 10 kills, Teagan Davenport had seven aces; Gwen Schroeder finished with a dozen digs, Emme Lubas handed out 17 assists, and Kylie Murphy and Caitlin Boyle both came up with three blocks for Fenwick.
For the Hawks, Kaylin Potter had a nice outing with nine kills while freshman outside Lavinya Oliveira chipped in a half dozen spikes. Senior libero Janelle Dalton had five aces and eight digs.
Pentucket 3, Hamilton-Wenham 1: Sophomore outside hitter Alex Jose led the Generals both offensively and from the service line; in her first varsity start, she had nine kills, five digs and four aces. Senior right side Bizzy Ireland added five kills and an ace while sophomore Abby Norris contributed three digs for HW, which fell by scores of 12-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-25.
BOYS SOCCER
Essex Tech 3, Pentucket 1: Kyle Heckman scored a pair of goals for the Hawks and Brendan Jones also buried one in the CAL victory.
Ipswich 1, Rockport 1: Caleb Jorge had the goal and Ned Buletza the assist as the Tigers earned a point. Goalkeeper Finn Wright stopped a penalty kick for Ipswich, which also saw great defense turned in by Spencer McDavitt and Jacoby Scarano. In addition, Michael Queen and Nate Pitner also played well.
Bishop Fenwick 1, Malden Catholic 0: Junior captain Marcus Simon scored off a corner kick to give Fenwick a satsifying win. Center backs Ben Beader and Payton Oreste, as well as outside backs Jackson Armata and Alejandro Aguilar, turned in strong performanes along with midfielder Cole Schroeder.
GIRLS SOCCER
Ipswich 5, Rockport 0: The unbeaten Tigers (2-0) continued to carry over momentum from last year’s Cinderella tourney run with their second straight shutout win. Lily Harper (2), Mary Love, Allie Wile and Asuka Keough scored goals for Ipswich, with Wile and Harper adding solo assists. Lola Morley and Sarah Belford contributed solid games defensively for IHS.
Essex Tech 2, Pentucket 0: Senior captain Chelsea Martinez scored both goals and fellow captain Emma Huggins posted the shutout as the Hawks (1-1) bounced back from their opening day loss in impressive fashion. Freshman Julia Kallianidis had a standout game defensively for Essex.
Hamilton-Wenham 1, Georgetown 1: Senior defender Maddy Wood finished off Lilly Giovannucci’s corner kick to give H-W (1-0-1) the lead but Georgetown capitalized on a corner of its own in the second half to make it a draw. Keepers Sasha Makogonov and Piper Shepherd played well while Evie Bernard and Tessa Hunt helped the Generals amass a 15-4 edge in shots on goal.
Bishop Fenwick 1, Malden Catholic 0: The Crusaders netted the game’s only goal when Maeve O’Donnell deposited Callie Reed’s corner kick serve at the 13 minute mark. Annie Swanson and Carly Salvo stood out defensively.
CROSS COUNTRY
Peabody victorious: The Tanners took down Winthrop in both boys and girls meets at home on Wednesday. Leading the boys were Declan Smith, Brian Stevens, Jackson Gueriero and Mohamed Lhassouani while the girls were paced by Sofia Schirripa, Jane Haight and Catherine Holleran.
