BOYS BASKETBALL
Peabody 79, Excel Academy 55: Thad Broughton recorded 24 points with 13 rebounds and had a near triple double alongside five assists, seven steals and two blocks to power the Tanners (3-11) on their home floor. Junior Mark Mendonca was just as effective with 23 points, six assists, four boards and three swipes. Peabody also got strong depth performances from Dom Domenici (eight points), Jeremiah Agbonavbare (six), Jeremiah Gerard (six) and Jack Smith (also six).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Swampscott 67, Lynn Tech 27: Sophomore Anna Kanders scored 20 points but seniors were the story on Senior Night as the Big Blue (10-4) officially punched their state tournament ticket. Senior captain Sam Ward scored 15 points and classmate Maddie Lilley also had an outstanding game.
“Every program dreams of students-athletes like Maddie and Sam. They lead by example and elevate everyone around them. They are the heartbeat of our team, proving that dedication and character define success,” coach Katelyn Leonard said.
Junior Lila Girard added 15 points and Kanders also had six points for Swampscott.
Hamilton-Wenham 48, Georgetown 32: Margot Bryce Morris (20 points) pounded the Royals in the paint, enabling the Generals (8-6) to open up their lead with a 22-10 second half. Lilly Giovannucci was also very strong on the block with nine points and Gabriella Jewitt scored nine while being excellent in distribution.
WRESTLING
St. John’s Prep 57, Haverhill 18: The Eagles cruised behind match wins by Collin Vitale (106), Ben Schumacher (126), Graham Conway (132), Boden Dormer (138), Jimmy Lally (144), Will LaVallee (150), Hayden Mirasolo (157), Charlie Poor (165), Mason Trela (175), Sam Josey (190) and Joe Irzyk (285).
Jacques shines as Danvers splits: A five-year wrestler for the Falcons, senior 126-pounder Logan Jacques concluded his home career at Danvers with two victories as his squad defeated Josiah Quincy, 48-18, but fell to Saugus/Peabody, 54-21, in a tri-meet Wednesday. Having finished fifth at sectionals last year, he is looking for a top four finish next month.
BOYS TRACK
Peabody 56, Beverly 30: The Tanners got some outstanding performances including meet wins by Henry Sawyer (300, 39.15), Osama Mishal (600, 1:35), Luke Murphy (1000, 3:10), Aiden Trainor (mile, 5:35), Salmane Lhassouani (2-mile, 12:23), Jake Marcotullio (shot put, 43-1) and Kavier Lopez (high jump, 5-10).
For the Panthers, Floyd White took first in the dash in 7.2 seconds, Myles Gregory won the hurdles in 8.45 seconds and Charlie Silva cleared 5-10 in the high jump to tie for first.
BOYS SKIING
Prep wins pair: Owen McLain was first among all competitors in 22.66 seconds and St. John’s Prep took down both Masconomet (113.5-21.5) and Newburyport (96-39) . Dylan Pelletier (24.51) and Andrew Pellegrini (24.56) also had good days for the Eagles.
Masconomet splits: Despite the loss to St. John’s Prep, Masconomet defeated North Andover, 81-54, thanks to strong runs by David Palmer (24.22 seconds), Ben Gaudin (26.05), Nolan Zamagni (26.22) and Tyler Durgan (26.45).
Gens split: Hamilton-Wenham took a narrow 68-67 loss to Newburyport but also defeated Haverhill 74-61. Colin McCaughey’s 24.26 was the best time of the day by a General while Zachary Smith clocked 25-flat, Sawyer Hancock hit 25.82 and Will Totten notched a 26.21.
