WASHINGTON, D.C. – Hurston Waldrep is set to don a new uniform Sunday. Multiple sources are reporting the Thomasville native is being called up by the Atlanta Braves and is expected to be the starting pitcher in Sunday’s game against the Washington Nationals.
ESPN has Waldrep listed as starting against Washington’s DJ Herz.
Waldrep, a first round draft pick by Atlanta out of Florida in 2023, is listed by MLB.com as the club’s No. 2 overall prospect.
He was invited to spring training this year before being assigned to AA Mississippi. There, he pitched in nine games, striking out 48 men in 49 innings while posting a 2.92 ERA.
The Braves promoted him to AAA Gwinnett on June 1. Waldrep has only pitched once for the Stripers, fanning 11 in a mere six frames of work.
Sunday’s gametime is 1:35 p.m.
