THOMASVILLE – When Thomasville High School’s JV volleyball squad took the court for their first game they struggled quite a bit. Serving and serve receiving was a problem for the JV group and they did not start their season as they would have hoped. Fast forward to August 12 where the same JV squad went undefeated in a tournament where they faced Brantley County, Perry, and Pierce County.
Head coach Jackie King said it was important for her girls to play these games and get the nerves out.
“Neves were big and that first game they struggled with their serves and serve receives. Just the nerves of playing that first game, they had to get past that. So, it’s nice in a tournament, where they can get a bunch of games under their belt and start to get in a rhythm. The competition progressively got more [competitive] when we played Pierce County and by then we were in more of a rhythm. Those nerves were gone,” King said. “We were getting our serves in better and that was something we worked on leading up to the tournament.”
The Bulldogs played very well on Saturday. They were able to defeat Brantley County and Perry in the first two games and faced Pierce County in the third and final contest where they won the first and third set to take the 2-1 victory.
“We were so excited. It just started to come together. Their serves were better. They had struggled with their serves in the first game we had,” said King as she praised her team’s ability to work together and improve. “What I’m seeing is that they are coming together. What we have been pushing and pushing a lot is that team work and them being in sync and I’m seeing that come together more.”
