The Thomasville History Center is gearing up for another amazing summer of crafts, games, and interactive fun at Camp Dawson and Camp LPH hosted by the Thomasville History Center. For more than twenty years, campers have gotten “hands-on” with history at annual camps and the staff looks forward to another summer of adventure.
The History Center’s camps now span rising Kindergarten through rising 8th grade. By adjusting the eligible ages, staff members feel they can design more age-appropriate experiences for campers that carry them through different learning stages. Camp Dawson is now targeted specifically toward elementary-graders and Camp LPH is most appropriate for middle graders.
Scholarships and partial scholarships are available for both camps and applications should be submitted to the History Center by May 8.
Using the History Center’s backyard and eight historic structures as a “classroom,” campers in rising Kindergarten through rising 5th grades will enjoy five days of fun June 5-9. Each group will experience parallel, age-appropriate activities across the property. Every day brings new adventures as campers explore Thomasville’s history from 12,000,000 years ago through the 21st century. Campers will also enjoy excursions out in the community on their journey through the past. At the end of the week, campers will host friends and family at a special exhibit opening, sharing their week’s adventures. Registration includes all activities and materials and is $175 for History Center members and $200 for non-members.
The Thomasville History Center and Landmarks are joining forces for a special 3-day camp experience at the Lapham-Patterson House for rising 6th through rising 8th graders June 20-22 from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Campers will explore the Dawson Street Historic District architecture, the stories of the families who lived there and historic preservation. Taking inspiration from the neighborhood, campers will each design and “construct” a house using cardboard boxes and mixed materials. Collectively, the campers’ creations will be arranged in a temporary diorama and remain on display at the Lapham-Patterson House through August. Registration is $130 for members of the History Center and $150 for non-members. Campers can sign up online at thomasvillehistory.org. Spaces will be limited and History Center and Landmarks members receive priority registration.
Camps begin at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. The History Center will do their best to accommodate requests for early drop off and late pickup (7:45 a.m.-5 p.m.); to arrange for extended hours, please contact the History Center directly.

The Thomasville History Center was formed in 1952 and opened the museum within the Flowers-Roberts House in 1972. Since 1972, the History Center’s collections have grown to include more than 500,000 artifacts and archival materials and eight historic structures. The History Center, in partnership with the state of Georgia, also operates the historic Lapham-Patterson House. Their board, staff, and growing membership invites the public to join them in enriching the community through the exploration and discovery of its history, people, and stories.
