THOMASVILLE- The Thomasville Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) celebrated its 112th birthday on July 18 with dinner at Sass! Restaurant. Chapter Regent Shelba Sellers greeted chapter members, prospective members and guests in attendance.
“The Thomasville Chapter, NSDAR was organized as the Ochlocknee Chapter on July 19, 1912. The name was changed to the Thomasville Chapter in 1928,” said Regent Sellers. There were 21 charter members of the Thomasville Chapter and Blanche Tarwater Merrill was the chapter’s Organizing Regent. There are currently 107 members in the Thomasville Chapter DAR. Regent Sellers also gave attendees a preview of chapter programs being planned for the upcoming year, which begins in September.
The Thomasville Chapter DAR held a Memorial Service to remember departed chapter members in 2024. The Service of Remembrance was led by Chapter Chaplain Drucilla Bennett and Regent Shelba Sellers to honor and pay tribute to the memory of Wallis Lee Carroll Cason and Janet (Sissy) Kirkland Huxford Thompson. “Their dedication to the historic, educational and patriotic objectives of our society has inspired all of us in our daily work for God, Home and Country,” said Regent Sellers. The service included lighting the memorial candle, scripture readings and placing white carnations in a vase for each departed member.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Its members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. With nearly 190,000 members in approximately 3,000 chapters worldwide, DAR is one of the world’s largest and most active service organizations. More than one million women have joined the DAR since it was founded. To learn more about the work of today’s DAR, visit www.DAR.org.
