VALDOSTA – Theatre Guild Valdosta is preparing to heat up the summer with “A Night of a Thousand Stars.”
The show is similar to last season’s “Spring Spectacular,” a musical revue featuring mostly veteran Guild cast members. Brawdy Gupton organized both “Spectacular” and “Stars.”
Gupton has been appearing in Valdosta-area theatre productions since childhood. He’s participated in shows with Valdosta Middle School, Valdosta High School, Drama Kidz, Gingerbread Players and numerous Theatre Guild Valdosta productions – both on stage and behind the scenes.
A Wiregrass Georgia Technical College cosmetology student, Gupton said he would like to pursue theatre as a career. Shows like “A Night of a Thousand Stars” points him in that direction.
He chose several songs from Broadway musicals for the show then asked Guild members to participate by performing assigned songs.
Songs include “Let Me Entertain You,” “Simple Joys of Maidenhood” from “Camelot,” “Bushel and a Peck” from “Guys and Dolls,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Dreamer in Disguise” from “Carrie: The Musical,” “Honeysuckle Rose” from “Ain’t Misbehavin,’” “Sex is in the Heel” from “Kinky Boots,” “On the Steps of the Palace” from “Into the Woods,” “Donkey Pot Pie” from “Shrek the Musical,” etc.
Several of the songs are from musicals performed in past Theatre Guild productions.
Gupton said he hopes to see the musical revue become an annual show for Theatre Guild, though it is unlikely next season with plans to replace The Dosta Playhouse stage floor later this year.
“A Night of a Thousand Stars” closes the 2023-24 season and offers a chance to see favorite Guild performers again before the start of the 2024-25 season in late August.
