Georgetown gave one of the best teams in Division 3 all it could handle over the weekend.
Traveling up to play undefeated Gloucester on Friday afternoon, the Royals at least got to celebrate a career milestone in what ended up being a 5-3 loss. It was a tie game heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Fishermen (8-0) were able to plate a pair to take the lead before closing things out in the top of the seventh.
But despite the first setback of the year for the Royals (5-1), Maddie Grant was still able to reach 400 career strikeouts during the game. The junior pitcher — now in her fourth year as the team’s starter — allowed only two earned runs on just two hits with nine punchouts to reach the milestone exactly on the number. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.
Then elsewhere for Georgetown, both Ava Fair (1-for-4) and Mia Girard (1-for-2) had an RBI, and the team’s other hits came from Gillien Figueroa, Jenna Johnson, Talya Mariani and Megan Maguire. They Royals will look to put the loss behind them and get back on track when they host Ipswich on Monday (1 p.m.).
PENTUCKET: McCoy homers, powers team past Tewksbury
It was the first step outside of the Cape Ann League for Pentucket this year, but the final result remained the same.
The Panthers welcomed in a solid Tewksbury squad on Friday, and got a 2-for-3 day with a home run from sophomore Caitlin McCoy to power the team to a 9-4 victory. Fellow sophomore Kallie White was praised for her defense by coach Deb Smith, and also went 1-for-3 at the plate with three RBI.
So far it’s been a crazy start to the season schedule-wise with already a handful of postponments, but to this point, nothing has phased the Panthers (4-0). Sarah Freitas went 2-for-4 during Friday’s win, Kam Bonneau went 2-for-3 with a clutch hit, and Ciara Penne went 1-for-3 with two RBI.
Up next, though, Pentucket will get its toughest test of the year when it hosts Triton on Monday (4 p.m.).
TRITON: Comeback effort falls just short
The potential game-winning run was at the plate.
During Friday’s contest, Triton trailed host Greater Lawrence Tech by two runs heading into the top of the seventh inning. The Vikings were able to plate one after Maggie Rennick ripped a two-out single that scored pinch runner Audrina Owens, momentarily keeping the comeback hopes alive.
But Greater Lawrence was able to get the game-ending groundout, and hold on for the thrilling victory over Triton, 9-8. The Vikings (3-2) hurt themselves with three errors on the day, as starter Emma Penniman only allowed four hits with just two of the runs she allowed being earned. The senior captain also had 12 strikeouts in the circle, and at the plate went 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBI.
But it wasn’t meant to be for the Vikings.
Elsewhere, Rennick went 3-for-5 out of the leadoff spot with two runs scored and two RBI. Both Addison Ewell (2 RBI) and Ava Johnson went 2-for-4, and Maddie January, Izze Turner and Jillian Giusto each had a hit. The Vikings out-hit the Reggies, 13-4.
GOVERNOR’S: Moroz homers, team splits week
It was another solid week for Governor’s Academy.
On Wednesday, the Govs got a great outing from Angelina Moroz in the circle, but were on the wrong end of a pitcher’s duel in a 2-0 loss to Brooks. The Merrimac native went the distance with just one of the runs she allowed being earned, and she struck out nine batters with no walks. However, the team could only muster one hit on the day, coming from Wayland native Cat Johnson out of the leadoff spot.
But Governor’s would respond over the weekend with a big league win over BB&N, 14-4. Moroz homered while being intentionally walked twice during that one, and in the circle struck out six with just one walk. For the season, she now owns a 3-3 record with a 1.69 ERA and 48 punchouts.
The Govs also got a big game at the plate from Danvers native Vivian Blake, who went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBI. Auburndale native Annette Matsuyasu went 2-for-2 with a triple and two RBI, Elizabeth Luong of Framingham went 3-for-4, and both Maggie Delay of Byfield and Caitlyn O’Donnell of Revere also had two hits.
NEWBURYPORT: Clippers can’t overcome miscues
For the first half inning, it looked like Newburyport was on its way to picking up a nice non-league win. Clara Thompson lined a two-run single to right field that scored Isla DeVivo and Sophie Lavallee, and the Clippers immediately jumped on host Danvers for a 2-0 lead.
But it quickly vanished.
The Falcons would respond with a three-run bottom of the first inning, then add a dozen more over the next few to cruise to a five-inning, 15-3 victory. The Clippers (3-3) hurt themselves with five errors, and weren’t able to work around the miscues with their bats.
Both Lavallee and Thompson (3 RBI) would finish the day 2-for-3 at the plate, and Cassidy Bolcome, DeVivo and Katie Kebler had the team’s other hits. The Clippers will look to put the loss behind them when they travel over to Essex Tech on Tuesday for a 4 p.m. first pitch.
