A mural depicting the importance of the ocean in our lives, created by local teens, was unveiled Saturday at the Rockport Art Association & Museum.
The mural “The Ocean is Our Lifeline” was created by participants in the Teen Arts Collaborative, an initiative involving the art association, Cape Ann Art Haven and Rockport Public Library.
The teens chose the theme, and their instructor proposed a layout of four individual images depicting this theme, according to Kristin Czarnecki, interim director at Rockport Art Association & Museum. The youths then sketched their ideas and selected, as a group, the four drawings for the mural. The instructor projected the images on hardwood boards, and the teens began blocking in the mural.
The painters finished the mural last year, Czarnecki said, and it was hung on the exterior wall of museum’s Maddocks Gallery for Saturday’s unveiling.
The special celebration Saturday featured music, food and art activities for children. The celebration was made possible by a Festivals Grant from Massachusetts Cultural Council.
