The Link of Cullman County has announced details about its upcoming pantry renovation and rebrand. The current pantry, Master’s Hand Food Pantry — a joint effort between Daystar Church and The Link — began operation in 2018.
“I recall the days we served 35 families in a week, and what a blessing we felt to have resources to serve with. Over the last 18 months especially, the needs have grown each time we have served,” Executive Director of The Link Melissa Betts said.
“In January of 2023, we served 198 households. In January of 2024, we served 677 households. Last Tuesday (June 11) alone we saw 95 households.”
Betts says that in order to meet the ever-growing need, a revamp is in order to freshen up procedures for a better neighbor experience. The modernization effort will take about two weeks, from June 25 to July 4, in which time the current pantry will not be distributing food. The Link encourages neighbors in need to visit the pantry before these dates to ensure their need is met.
“When our pantry reopens, it will have a new name and a new approach,” Betts said. “The Master’s Hand Food Pantry will become The Pantry at The Link, or for short, The Pantry. When you walk into The Pantry, you will sign in and be greeted by a volunteer and a shopping cart. You will then be able to “shop” your own produce, baked goods, meat choices and snack items. Pre-packed bags will be based on what the household qualifies for, such as household size or dietary restrictions.”
Betts believes this refreshed, person-to-person approach will restore a sense of dignity to those who may need an extra hand from time to time, and will make clients they serve feel more empowered; by changing the attitude of serving those facing food insecurity, it takes the focus off of “being needy” and opens the door to finding community.
“We want our neighbors to have dignity when they visit The Pantry. It is our goal to cut out any wait time, and for people to have a choice about the food they take home,” Betts said.
Betts also shared that during this first phase of renovations, opportunities are plenty for the community at large to step in and make an impact right alongside The Link.
“We are counting on our community to support these next steps in our growth. We are working to secure a sponsor for the pantry carts and shopping bags. If your company would like to sponsor a couple of pantry carts or provide shopping bags with your business logo on them, we would love to hear from you.”
