Join us for exciting classes during our Fall session Oct. 1-30 on Roane State Community College campus at 2567 Cook Rd. (Just off Genesis Rd.). Registration began Sept.23 and continues for classes throughout the session. All class detail information is on-line at https://roanestate.edu/CLL.
Enrollment to join CLL is only $40/calendar year or $20 for the fall session and students can attend as many classes as they want free. (A small materials fee may be charged for a specific class and is noted in the description). All our staff and instructors are volunteers. Please read our on-line catalog, which will provide answers to most questions. You may send comments to cllteam@cllcrossville.org and a volunteer will respond usually within 24 hours. The staff on hand at Roane State Campus are not equipped to answer questions about our program.
Tuesday, Oct. 1 and 8: Home Maintenance 101: Topics will include trouble-shooting problems and repair of drywall, plumbing, electrical features, doors, windows, flooring, masonry, and others, taught by Richard Morawski for two sessions. 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Wednesday, Oct. 2: The Effects of the French and Indian War on the American Revolution: Join Dwayne McGhee as he shows us how the events of the French and Indian War put the British Colonies in the crosshairs of the two major empires as they competed for control of North America. 1:30-3.
Wednesday, Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30: Playing Bridge for Beginners: Join Stuart Napear to learn the beginning basics and terms in this five-session class, discussing the two styles of bidding, but will concentrate on the newer convention, American Standard. 9-11.
Thursday, Oct. 3: Interior Design Bootcamp: Jessica Barbara Shatz can’t teach you everything about color and interior design in a few hours, but she can teach you how to have confidence in your own design flair and creativity. 1-2:30.
Thursday, Oct. 3: The Articles of Confederation, The America’s First Constitution: Dr. Cheryl Brown is back to continue the series “Learn About Your Government” with a discussion about the problems that arose when this document was created and how the US Constitution was meant to correct those problems. 10-11:30.
Monday, Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28: American Sign Language (ASL 2): Moving beyond the basic signs taught in ASL1, students will begin to put together sentences and have conversations with each other and the instructors, Bob and Kathy Tolich. 9-11.
Monday, Oct. 7, 14, and 28: Sacred Journey: Are you spiritually curious and open to uncommon methods? Using selections from the Tanakh, the New Testament, and additional inspired writings, Christine Lister will help us explore ways to interact with the text for a personal encounter with the Creator in this three-session class. 11-12:30.
Monday and Wednesday, Oct. 7, 9, 21, and 23: Mah Jong Made Easy: In this 4-session class Nita Hawes will teach the basics of how to read American Mah Jong cards, rules of the game, and strategies for beginners. A fun class! 2:30-4:30.
Wednesday, Oct. 9: Protecting the Obed Watershed: This course will present information about the Obed Watershed and its impact on the water in Cumberland County, led by Bill Morgan. 9-10:30.
Thursday, Oct. 10: Women and Heart Disease: Holly Hill will help participants identify the differences in men and women related to the development and outcome of cardiovascular disease, becoming familiar with the differences in symptoms of a heart attack between men and woman, and discuss why women have poorer outcomes than men. 1-2:30.
Thursday, Oct. 10: Reverse Mortgage 101: Antoinette Cassavaugh will cover the basics of the FHA insured reverse mortgage and the variation of that mortgage used for a purchase. 10-11:30.
Monday, Oct. 14: An Overview of the Art of Falconry: Mike Faircloth will explain the workings of training and hunting with wild caught raptors. He’ll share the gear required for both the raptors and the handlers, with accompanying videos for his presentation. 2-3:30.
Tuesday, Oct. 15: Alcohol Ink Ornaments: Michelle Bayless will teach students how to use alcohol ink to transform clear glass bulbs into unique decorations. There is a $5.00 materials fee payable to the instructor on the day of class. 1-2:30.
Wednesday, Oct. 16: Secure/Encrypted Email and Calendar-Do You Need it? Dave Korb will provide information on the benefits, features, and limitations of secure /encrypted email and calendar services. 1-2:30.
Thursday, Oct. 17: What Does Healthy Aging Look Like? Shehla Rooney will discuss daily strategies and exercises to facilitate healthy aging, including suggestions for home safety. 9:30-11.
Wednesday, Oct. 23: The Three Presidents from Tennessee: Join JC Davis, dressed in period costumes, as he presents an entertaining look at Presidents Andrew Jackson, James. K Polk, and Andrew Johnson. Their lives before and after their terms will be discussed, including little-known facts. 1-2:30.
Thursday, Oct. 24: Herbal Healers: Melody Rose will cover a wide variety of information about herbs, their basic terminology, their usage, how to harvest, dried versus fresh, herbs for cooking, presentation techniques, and creative use of herbs. 10-11:30.
Tuesday, Oct. 29: Learn About Our Cumberland County Playhouse: Bryce McDonald will entertain us with stories about the beginnings of the Playhouse, what it takes for a theater to function, and many theater escapades. 10-11:30.
Wednesday, Oct. 30: Tales of Tragedy, Adventure, and Interesting Characters from the Great Smokey Mountains: John McArthur is a back with more stories from his childhood growing up exploring the Smokey Mountains. He’ll talk about some of the more notorious events and characters from the Smokies. 1-2:30.
