The Northwest Georgia Regional Library System has offered the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge for many years. This program encourages parents to read 1,000 books with their children before the children enter kindergarten.
This is a fun, free program to help promote the development of your child’s pre-reading skills that are vital to kindergarten readiness.
Reading aloud to your child is very beneficial to their overall development. It assists with healthy brain development by helping them visualize more and developing better visual skills for reading such as recognizing more letters and words faster.
Children who are read to tend to have better communication skills and cognitive abilities. Reading to your child promotes emotional and social development and helps with bonding.
Who can participate? Any child who hasn’t started kindergarten is encouraged to participate.
How do you sign up? Use Beanstack to log your reading, and earn badges. Just go to ngrl.beanstack.org to sign up. Paper logs are also available at your local library branch.
Have fun! If you read just one book a night to your child you will complete the program in under three years. If you read two books a night it will take you less than a year and a half to finish.
All children who complete the challenge before kindergarten will receive a prize from their branch library.
