SALEM, Mass. — A teacher accused of sexually assaulting a dozen young girls is now facing an additional rape charge.
Daniel Hakim, 38, of North Andover, was indicted by the Essex County grand jury on an additional charge of aggravated rape of a child. The new indictment was handed down on March 6, according to court records.
The indictment stems from “new conduct related to an existing victim,” according to a spokesperson for Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker’s office.
It’s unclear when he will be arraigned on the new charge.
Hakim, formerly a school teacher in Salem, Mass., is already charged with 34 counts of child rape and indecent assault and battery on a child under age 14.
He is scheduled to go on trial Aug. 18.
Hakim is accused of sexually assaulting a dozen girls between the ages of 6 and 8 while working as a teacher at the Saltonstall School in Salem, Mass.
Hakim, who posted $200,000 bail, is on pre-trial home confinement but can leave his house wearing a GPS monitor. He has to be home, however, between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., according to a judge’s ruling.
Hakim is not allowed to enter the city of Salem or the towns of Swampscott, North Attleboro or Walpole, according to court records.
Also, Hakim cannot have unsupervised contact with children under 18. He is not allowed to work without the approval of the court, according to the previous ruling.
His defense attorneys recently filed a motion to remove his electronic monitoring device and lift his curfew so he could spend more time out at night and with his children. Prosecutors opposed the request which was denied by a superior court judge.
The sexual assault charges Hakim is facing carry minimum sentences of 10 years in prison and maximum sentences of life in prison.
School officials, the Department of Children and Families, and Salem police were aware of multiple accusations of inappropriate behavior by Hakim in 2018, when he was terminated by the school and his teaching license suspended.
He formally surrendered his teaching license in 2020.
DCF had previously made a determination that the accusations were “unsupported.”
Prior to working in the Salem Public Schools, Hakim had been employed by several other school districts and schools.
He worked at the Brooks School in North Andover in 2015 and 2016 in a “Teen Challenge” program.
He also worked as a health teacher at the Shawsheen Elementary School in Wilmington from 2013 until 2015, and for the Collaborative for Educational Services from 2009 until 2013.
