TRAVERSE CITY — Traverse City Central grad Josh Burnham is leaving the Notre Dame football program and entering the transfer portal.
Burnham announced the decision in an Instagram post Tuesday evening.
In an earlier post, Burnham may have hinted at a possible destination, posting a Max Bullough highlight film.
Also from Traverse City, Bullough was Notre Dame’s linebackers coach, and recently was hired as co-defensive coordinator by new head coach Pat Fitzgerald at Michigan State.
The 6-foot-4, 260-pound Burnham has one year of eligibility remaining.
Burnham saw action in all 12 games this season with the Fighting Irish, making four starts at defensive end. He had 16 tackles, 10 solos, three sacks and was third on the team with six tackles for loss. He also threw for an 84-yard touchdown on a fake punt against Stanford last month.
He started 10 games as a sophomore, with 30 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and two sacks.
In his Notre Dame career, he has 65 tackles, six sacks and 17 tackles for loss.
A first-team all-state pick in both 2020 and 2021 at TC Central, Burnham was named the Record-Eagle’s Player of the Year twice, as well as the 2021 Gatorade Football Player of the Year for Michigan. He was rated as the No. 2 player in Michigan coming out of high school that season, announcing his commitment to Notre Dame in a live stream from Thirlby Field on the CBS Sports Network.
