Synergy Medical Associates is a primary care office that provides internal medicine care for patients 15 and older.
This entails diagnosis and management of chronic medical conditions and monitoring of age appropriate preventive services.
In addition, Synergy Medical Associates is proud to be the first in this area to bring world renowned FDA approved devices used for strengthening of core and pelvic muscle to improve quality of life.
The inception of Synergy Medical Associates occurred in 2016 as Renee Boston, PA-C was completing physician assistant training. Joanna Gibbs, MD, the co-founder, was a practicing physician partner with Crossville Medical Group for fifteen years. Having a vision to continue
to practice patient centered care, Gibbs left corporate health care and Synergy Medical Associates was born. The practice opened in July 2017 on Taylor Ave. The practice started with four ambitious and dedicated employees. Loyal patients followed Dr. Gibbs to the new setting and new patients were welcomed to the Synergy family.
After three years of practice, several patients requested aesthetic services. Synergy’s providers decided to attend IAPAM (International Association for Providers in Aesthetic Medicine) training in Scottsdale, AZ. This was a rigorous five-day class that reviewed anatomy and indications for aesthetic treatments. Initially, the focus was on neurotoxin, filler and skin care regimens.
The COVID pandemic stalled the aesthetic practice as the office adapted to a new type of medical practice involving Telehealth. In 2022, Synergy took the demographics of its patients into consideration and purchased the EM Suite. This was a family of FDA approved devices that are utilized to strengthen muscle and soft tissues. Cosmetically they are branded as body sculpting but with a history of geriatric medicine, Synergy utilized them more as a wellness and functional treatment.
“Chronic low back pain sufferers benefit from EM Sculpt Neo. The device, EM Sella is most notably used for stress incontinence and pelvic floor strengthening. EM Face provides a scalpel free option to tightening sagging facial and chin muscles. The past year has been an exciting one for our clinic. The opportunity to expand our office was available and we rose to the challenge to relocate to 57 West Adams St. We proudly renovated a previous primary care office and made it our own,” Gibbs said.
The medical side continues to add new patients when the schedule will allow. Twenty three years in practice has resulted in a loyal following of patients.
“This move doubled our footprint and allowed the medical and aesthetic services to have their own space. Growth and additional square footage provided for expanded facial services. The Geneo device provides Glo2Facials that utilize our own oxygen with customized minerals to exfoliate and hydrates the superficial layers of the face. This service is certainly a favorite of clients who leave with ‘glowing’ and fuller feeling faces. The RejuvaPen is offered for those clients who want a more aggressive approach to fighting the effect of aging. It utilizes microneedling to stimulate collagen formation to lessen wrinkle lines. Various laser treatments and peels round out our aesthetic menu which we developed with extensive training and caution,” Gibbs said.
Moving into 2025 Synergy hopes to focus on functional medicine and improving quality of life for aging patients. The dialogue in medical visits has changed and access to specialist care is getting more delayed and filled with dissatisfaction.
“The staff at Synergy Medical dedicates themselves to communication and availability. Our staff is praised on all platforms of social media for their thoroughness and compassion. The name Synergy was based on the definition: the cooperation of two or more entities produces an effect greater than the sum of their separate effects. That is the daily motto of our team for the betterment of our patients and clients,” Gibbs said.
The providers at Synergy Medical are open to discussions about how to utilize the EM Suite, vitamin injections and weight loss medications.
“The training and experience of Synergy’s providers is unmatched by any local clinic with over 55 years of experience providing health care to patients. Four professional degrees are proudly represented — physical therapy, physician assistant, pharmacy and medicine,” Gibbs said.
Both providers are active in the education of students from South College and Lincoln Memorial DCOM. This is an inherited passion for both Gibbs and Boston, as both their mothers were teachers.
