KEUKA PARK, NY — A surprise reunion between a Keuka College graduate and her Army combat medic brother was one of the emotional highlights of the college’s 2026 commencement ceremony Saturday.
Management major Madisyn Theresa Robinson-Mayer, of Morrisonville, was one of two student speakers during the ceremony. After delivering her remarks, she received a surprise when her older brother, Army Combat Medic Specialist Tyler Robinson, unexpectedly joined her.
Robinson-Mayer, who hadn’t seen her brother since Christmas, said she never thought he would be there.
“I was absolutely shocked,” she said after the ceremony. “I had no idea. He’s been lying to me for months!”
The moment unfolded after President Amy Storey paused before delivering her remarks and invited Madisyn and fellow student speaker Akinlana Popoola to the front of the stage for photos. Standing beside Madisyn, Storey then told the crowd:
“Madisyn, I think something’s missing from our picture. I would like to ask if Army Combat Medic Specialist Tyler Robinson can join us for a moment.”
Robinson-Mayer immediately turned toward the audience, covering her mouth in disbelief as her brother emerged, carrying flowers. The siblings embraced to a standing ovation before posing for photos.
Robinson had flown overnight from Fort Stewart, Georgia, where he is currently stationed, to attend the ceremony. Though he managed to keep the trip secret from his younger sister, he said there was never any question about whether he would come.
“My siblings are very important, and she’s the first one to graduate college,” he said. “She always looks up to me, so it’s nice to be able to support her. I’m proud of her.”
For Robinson-Mayer, her brother’s presence made an already meaningful day even more memorable.
“It’s something I always wished for,” she said. “I didn’t think he could make it, especially all the way from Georgia.”
