Musical history at the museum
HAVERHILL — The musical duo Sultana will perform “History and Legends through Song” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 24, at Buttonwoods Museum, 240 Water St.
The group will be debuting two songs about Haverhill history that were crafted for this show at the request of Buttonwoods Museum. One song is about the historical and controversial Haverhill icon Hannah Duston, the other about the tense struggle of 19th century women in the shoe factories to receive fair pay.
Sultana was created by Haverhill residents Jon and Li Waterman, two lifelong musicians and songwriters. Jon is also a licensed history teacher.
“History and Legends through Song” consists of songs and related history on topics ranging from ancient Mesopotamia to modern times. The show is part of their “Live Music Making History Live” which Jon Waterman created in 2018.
Waterman said he believes that history and entertainment go hand in hand because songs, stories, and theatre have discussed history throughout the ages.
The program is funded by a grant from Haverhill Cultural Council, a local agency that promotes the availability of multicultural experiences.
Admission is free and the event is open to the public.
