HAMPSTEAD — The Town of Hampstead on Wednesday issued an advisory to residents and visitors that Sunset Lake tested positive for cyanobacteria and will be closed to swimming and wading.
Exposure to the blue-green algae can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or fever in humans and pets, and sometimes death in pets. Anyone who comes in contact with the toxic algae should rinse off with fresh water and pets should be seen by a vet.
There are currently no other public or private lakes and beaches in the immediate area under advisory. However, many bodies of water will be tested regularly throughout the summer season.
