Monday was a case study in playing until the final buzzer.
For the first 44 minutes and 7 seconds of the game, the Newburyport boys hockey team’s winning streak looked all but cooked. Visiting Bishop Fenwick held a one-goal lead, and all it had to do was stand tall in front of its goalie for 60 more seconds.
That, however, proved easier said than done.
With 53 seconds left, Jack Sullivan scored the game-tying goal — his second of the game — off a pretty feed from Luke MacIsaac following a Tommy Gagnon forced turnover. That was plenty enough cause for celebration. But just 30 seconds later — with only 23 ticks left on the clock — Henry Waddell poked home a MacIsaac rebound to lift Newburyport to the dramatic comeback win, 3-2, over a stunned Bishop Fenwick.
It was the fifth straight victory for the Clippers (10-7-0), who got 22 saves from Damien Lamb in the triumph.
