Another top-three finish for the Newton girls track and field team.
The Lady Eagles placed second in Friday’s 15-team event with 112 points. They finished third in 2024, second in 2023 and won the event in 2022.
Olney (Richland County) finished first with 121 points. Robinson was third with 91. Paris was fourth with 63. Shelbyville was fifth with 59. Altamont was sixth with 50. Teutopolis was seventh with 46. Marshall was eighth with 42. Mt. Carmel was ninth with 32 and Bridgeport (Red Hill) and Cumberland tied for 10th with 19 points.
Locally, Brownstown-St. Elmo finished 12th with 17 points and Neoga was 13th with 11.
Newton took home victories in the 4×200-meter relay, the pole vault and the long jump. The 4×200 team (seniors Makayla McVicar and Sydney Kinder, junior Morgan Schafer and freshman Stella Schackmann) finished in 1:50.79. Senior Karasyn Martin won the pole vault at 10 feet, 11.75 inches. Schackmann won the long jump at 15 feet, 8.5 inches.
Schackmann had a busy meet as she competed in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. She finished second in the 100 at 12.76 seconds and the 200 with a 26.91-second personal record.
Freshman Brenly Francis finished seventh in the 400 with a 1:09 personal record. Sophomore Grace Schumacher was fifth in the 800 at 2:33. Junior Layna Marshall was fourth in the 1600 at 6:02 and second in the 3200 at 12:56.
Schafer finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 17.75 seconds. Karasyn Martin finished eighth in the 300-meter hurdles at 53.09 seconds.
The 4×100-meter relay team (McVicar, Kinder, Schafer and sophomore Ava Duncan) finished in third at 53 seconds. The 4×400 team (McVicar, Schumacher and Karasyn and Camryn Martin) finished in third at 4:24. The 4×800 team (Schumacher, Karasyn and Camryn Martin and freshman Avery Geier) finished third at 10:52.
Duncan finished seventh in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 29 feet. Sophomore Maddie Brummer was sixth in the discus at 91 feet, 6.75 inches. Freshman Audrey Beals was ninth in the high jump at four feet, six inches. Kinder was third in the triple jump at 34 feet, three inches.
Altamont senior Abigail Weishaar finished fifth in the 100-meter dash with a personal-best time of 12.95 seconds and was second in the 400 with a personal-best time of 1:01.14. Twin sister, and senior, Gabriella Weishaar finished fourth in the 200 with a 26.77-second person record. The Altamont 4×100-meter relay team (Gabriella and Abigail Weishaart, freshman Ada Roberts and junior Katie Tedrick) finished second in 52.79 seconds. The 4×200 team (Gabriella Weishaar, Tedrick, Roberts and Keely Fleeharty) finished second in 1:55. Sophomore Justyce Higgs finished third in the discus with a personal-best throw of 100 feet, seven inches. Freshman Ada Roberts was second in the long jump with a jump of 15 feet, 3.75 inches.
Neoga senior, and Lake Land recruit, Atalie Osborn finished ninth in the 800 at 2:53 and ninth in the 1600 at 6:25. Senior Brynn Richards was fourth in the shot put with a personal-best throw of 32 feet, three inches.
Teutopolis sophomore Mary Jane Dennis was fourth in the 3200 at 15 minutes. The Lady Shoes 4×800 team (sophomores Pearl Huber and Juliana Wernsing, senior Madeline Zane and freshman Macy Petersen) was fifth in 12:10. Junior Adiana Davidson finished seventh in the high jump with a leap of four feet, 7.75 inches. Junior Samantha Habing was fifth in the pole vault with a vault of seven feet, 11.5 inches. Senior Ella Neihls was second in the triple jump with a jump of 34 feet, 10.75 inches.
Cumberland junior Hannah Shoemaker finished second in the 100-meter hurdles with a 16.55-second personal record. The Lady Pirates 4×400 team (Shoemaker, freshman Kaelin Edwards, sophomore Kaelin Leitch and senior Brielle Aaron) finished sixth in 4:50.
Brownstown senior Katie Berner was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 51.92 seconds.

Neoga fell to Casey-Westfield, 10-0, at Jerald Barr Field outside of Casey-Westfield High School.
Matt Propst, Landon Titus and Grady Haarman had one hit for the Indians (11-5).
Garrett Ballinger started and allowed five hits, five runs and one walk in two innings. Grady Haarman, Ethan O’Dell and Braylon Sparrow followed. Haarman allowed four hits, five runs (three earned) and two walks in 2 1/3 innings. O’Dell allowed two walks. Sparrow allowed one hit.
Farina (South Central) 13, Flora 4
South Central defeated Flora, 13-4, in the second game of the South Central Wooden Bat Tournament.
The Cougars (7-6) scored two runs in the first and second, four in the third and sixth and one in the fifth.
Colton Smith had three hits (one home run), two runs and five RBI.
Trevan Sidwell had two hits and two RBI. Callaway Smith had one hit (one home run), four runs and one RBI. Maddox Robb had one hit and one RBI. Hudson Moore had one hit and two runs. Evan Hoover had one hit (one home run), two runs and three RBI. Luke Shumate scored two runs.
Chase Guerrettaz started and allowed five hits, four runs (three earned) and one walk to three strikeouts in four innings. Zane Montes followed in the fifth and allowed two hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

North Clay defeated Woodlawn, 12-0, in the first game of the South Central Wooden Bat Tournament.
The Cardinals (11-4) scored eight runs in the first and four in the second.
Collin Schnepper had two hits, two runs and one RBI.
Cody Zimdars had one hit, one run and one RBI. Ian Jones had one hit, one run and two RBIB. Carder Walden had one hit. Jack Compton had three runs and one RBI. Ryker Dodson had one RBI and Cayden Craig and Evan Clifton scored one run.
Walden started and allowed two hits and one walk in one inning. Ben Czyzewski and Keegan Sullens followed. Czyzewski allowed two hits and four walks to three strikeouts in two innings. Sullens allowed one walk to one strikeout in two innings.

Effingham fell to Champaign (Central), 13-1, at Effingham High School Softball Field.
The Flaming Hearts (7-5) scored in the fourth.
Keagyn Koenig had one hit (one home run), one run and one RBI.
Ryley Engel, Sidney Donaldson and Madi Kirk had one hit.
Saige Althoff started and allowed 12 hits, 11 runs (seven earned) and one walk to six strikeouts in three innings. Natalie Armstrong followed and allowed two hits and two runs (one earned) to two strikeouts in two innings.

Newton defeated Altamont, 2-0, at Jasper County Boys and Girls Park.
The Lady Eagles (11-4) scored one run in the first and sixth.

Neoga defeated North Clay, 9-1, in a National Trail Conference game at Jennings Park.
The Indians (4-10, 2-4 league) scored two runs in the first, one in the third and fourth and five in the fifth. The Lady Cardinals (1-5, 1-3 league) scored in the sixth.
Josalyn Brandenburg had three hits, two runs and one RBI. Audrey Kepp had two hits, one run and four RBI. Kadie Becker had two hits, one run and two RBI. Avery Rider had two hits and two runs.
Kenly Westendorf had one hit. Taylor Campbell had one hit and one run and Hannah Propst and Brooklynn Douglas scored one run.
Propst pitched and allowed three hits and one unearned run with 14 strikeouts in seven innings.
