Stone Memorial and Cumberland County high schools battled back and forth on the bowling lanes late last week.
The annual competition has become a good rivalry as both programs are developing into solid postseason contenders.
The latest contest was a hard-fought battle with the Stone Memorial girls winning and, as a result, earning the second seed in the upcoming district tournament.
In the boys division, Cumberland County proved to be too much for the Panthers.The Lady Panthers jumped on top of CCHS from the start to earn the victory with a 16-11 decision.
Stone Memorial won the first traditional game 800-731. SMHS kept the pace going in the second game as the Lady Panthers won 850-801.
Hailey Jones set a good pace for Stone Memorial. She fired a 168 in the first game and followed that with a 165. Natalee Findley shot 154 and 149, while Ally Davis had 148 and 137.
Lesley Garrett tried to help Cumberland County keep up with Stone. Garrett shot a 156 in the opener and a 178 in the finale.
Anna Fusco carded games of 124 and 133, Neveah Schaub fired a 130 and Taylor Vickers posted a 135.Cumberland County came back to win both Baker games.
The Lady Jets took the opener 177-149 and posted a 130-105 score in the final game, but it wasn’t enough. Stone Memorial won the total pin count, 1,904-1,839.
Traditional games are contests where five players of each team roll 10 frames until the game is completed.
The Baker games are contests where one team’s five bowlers bowl alternate frames until the game is completed.
The boys match didn’t turn out so well for Stone Memorial. The Panthers dropped a 20.5-6.5 decision to Cumberland County.
The Jets led 8-0 after the first traditional game and 12.5-3.5 after the second one. CCHS won the first contest 1,203-854 with Ethan Phan leading the way with a 238. Alex Smith fired a 229 and Elijah Schley shot 216.
Stone Memorial, on the other hand, struggled offensively. Nathan Busler had the top score with a 203.
Alex Padgett carded a 160 and Mason Howard shot 159.CCHS took the second traditional game 1,007-939.
Phan came back with a 215, Cody Gates had 178, and Alex Smith came back with a 172.Howard shot a big score of 223 in the second game for Stone Memorial.
Busler added a 175 and Gavin Selby posted a 158.Cumberland County and Stone Memorial split the two Baker games.
CCHS took the first one, winning 148-130. In the final contest, Stone won 153-147.
