The Stone Memorial Lady Panthers scored from just about everywhere on the field last week when they battled visiting Upperman in a district soccer contest in Crossville.
SMHS had three different scorers on the night, including a five-goal effort by Emma Thompson, on its way to a 9-0 victory over the Lady Bees.
“It feels good to get a big district win,” said Stone Memorial Coach Madison Buffkin. “We definitely could have played better and had some better connections through passing.
“I was hoping for a better game coming out of Gatlinburg [Smoky Mountain Cup], but we will work on it this week to get ready for next week.”
Thompson got the scoring going for Stone Memorial with a goal in the 25th minute to make it 1-0. It wasn’t long before she scored again with a shot in the lower right corner to make 2-0 heading into halftime.
“We’ve gotten a lot better,” Buffkin said. “However, we’ve often been scared to shoot, but definitely could have. We saw a lot more shooting today than we have been seeing.
“We’re spreading the offense around, but we’ve got to take the shots when we have them.”
Jayne Warlick opened the scoring in the second half with a goal in the 42nd minute of play with Thompson scoring again just 60 seconds later to post Stone Memorial to a 4-0 lead.
Those roles were reversed later as Thompson got her fourth goal in the 48th minute with Warlick scoring in the 49th frame to make it 6-0.
Stone added three goals in a three-minute span to close out the game. Melody Borngrebe got a tally in the 55th minute with Thomspon getting her final score in the 56th minute.
Borngrebe got the last one in the 58th minute to close out the scoring.
“Our defense has been doing pretty well,” Buffkin said. “Midfielders come back and help a lot for us. We’re working together really well..
Earlier this week, Stone took on Jackson County and CCHS. Scores were not available by deadline.
“We’re moving forward by staying focused,” Buffkin said. “We don’t want to think too far ahead; we want to focus on the now. If we can do that, we will be alright.”
