The jumping and throwing events have been staples for Peabody High and that trend continued at this weekend’s state championship meets.
Junior Alex Jackson won the Division 2 shot put title with a toss of 57-feet-11-inches to help the Tanners finish fifth as a team in the state meet at Merrimack College, one of six divisional meets held around Massachusetts this weekend.
Jackson also picked up second overall in the discus (176-04) while junior Evan Bedard bronze medaled in both the triple jump (44-10 1/2 for a new school record) and long jump (21-11 1/4). Brian Stevens won bronze in the low hurdles (56.92) and Riley Michard earned fifth in the triple jump.
Peyton Smith came in seventh in the high hurdles, Dorlyn Morel was 11th in the 400, Declan Smith was ninth in the 800 and Areno Saint-Victor placed in both the discus (9th) and shot put (11th). Kobe Avery also picked up tenth in the long jump and Aneudy Medrano was seventh in the javelin.
In the relays, Peabody’s 4×400 of Morel, Stevens, Smith and Mohamed Ihassouani made the podium in fourth and the 4×100 placed sixth.
Alessandra Forgione led Peabody’s girls by coming in second in the javelin (122-10) and fourth in the discus (117-11). Makayla Kokozenis placed ninth in the triple jump as well as 11th in the high jump and Hannington Senfuma was 11th in the boys high jump.
Beverly’s boys took home a handful of medals led by second place Leo Sherriff in the high hurdles (14.86) and also came in eighth in the high jump (5-10). Ray Kwiatek earned third in the 400 (39.30) as well as fifth in the 200 (22.33).
Harry Silva took home silver in the long jump with a leap of 22-feet-1/2 inch and the Panther 4×100 came in eighth.
Grace Galbreath led the Panther girls by coming in fifth in the long jump (16-10 3/4) as well as seventh in the low hurdles (69.47). Julia Guanci was also 11th in the long jump.
Essex Tech’s foray into D2 competition yielded impressive results as Nora Kiesel took home silver in the 400 (58.33 for a personal best) and third in the 200 (25.54). Maci Abbatessa earned seventh in the shot put (34-02) and 13th in the discus while Kennedy Moyle was tenth in the long jump (16-2 1/4), the 4×400 relay earned fifth and the 4×100 was tenth.
Each Division champion plus the next best qualifying marks across all divisions will advance to next weekend’s MIAA Meet of Champions at Fitchburg State. Other results from this weekend’s state meets, listed by Division, were:
Division 1
At Westfield State University, St. John’s Prep was runner-up to champion Acton-Boxboro’s 70 points with a total of 61. Aithan Bezanson won the D1 state title in the pentathlon with 3384 points while Lincoln Massaro was third and the Eagles scored 18 points in that event.
Among key point getters for the Eagles were Kye McClory (third, javelin, 151-11) and Mickey Kuleszka (fourth, javelin, 151-11), Andrew Bertucci (seventh, high jump, 6-0), Merrick Barlow (fourth, long jump, 21-01), Anthony Ragusa (fourth, shot put, 49-6) and Gael Garcia (fifth, shot put, 49-4 1/2). Nick MacDonald also placed eighth in the 800 and Daniel Padley was 11th.
St. John’s also scored big points in the relays. The 4×100 of Ahmir Hykel, Dayvian Sullivan, Quinn Hubbard and Brendan Burke was second overall (42.45) and the 4×800 of MacDonald, Will Pechinsky, Arjun Cooper and Padley also grabbed silver (7:56.74).
Division 6
Hamilton-Wenham’s girls had a phenomenal showing at Merrimack College, finishing second with 57 points behind champion Mount Greylock’s 97. Junior star Georgia Wilson scored a bunch of those points herself, winning the state title in triple jump (36 feet-7 inches) while finishing second in the 100 (12.8) and fifth in the 200 (26.13).
Freshman Grace Rich won the title in the mile (5:11) and also came in fourth in the 2-mile, while Asa Labell placed in both the mile (5th, 5:18) and 2-mile (3rd, 11:35). The pair each ran a leg of the silver medal winning 4×800 relay along with Charlotte Madden and Ema Klefti (10:06). Other point earners for H-W were Caroline Monahan (7th, low hurdles) and Annie Moynihan was 12th in the long jump.
For the H-W boys, Ben Rich placed fourth in the 2-mile (9:52) and sixth in the mile (4:28). The 4×800 of Rich, James Regan, Cole Regan and Clark Glidden placed seventh.
A pair of silver medals came home to Ipswich as Kameya Perron was second in the pole vault (10-6) and Alana Novello was second in the low hurdles (66.89).. The Tiger girls 4×400 placed fifth, Lily Harper came in eighth in the 400 and Novello (5th) and Perron (7th) both placed in the high hurdles.
Division 3
Marblehead’s distance boys were busy at the D3 meet at Bridgewater State as Will Cerrutti won the state title in the mile (4:19) and also placed fifth in the 800. Isaac Gross then took bronze in the 2-mile (9:30) and Nathaniel Assa wasn’t far behind in sixth (9:43).
Thomas Carlson took second in the 100 (11.25) and also grabbed fifth in the 200 (22.74).
For the Magician girls, sophomore Mari O’Connell placed third in the mile (5:10) and well as fourth in the 2-mile (11:16). Rachael Albert earned a third in the discus (112-08) as well as seventh in the shot put.
Paige Treawell picked up third in the high hurdles (16.22) as well as seventh in both the high and long jumps. Sadie Halpern placed sixth in the 400 (60.13). Kate Twomey also grabbed eighth in the 800.
The Magicians also earned fourth place points in both the boys and girls 4×400 relays.
The Northeastern Conference champs from Masconomet were fifth overall in the girls standings. Remmi Cote’s silver medal in the javelin was the high water mark for the Chieftains while the 4×800 relay of Savannah Stevens, Ellie Green, Madison Gibeau-Schmitt and Teagan Kane won a bronze.
Lauren Boughner placed third in the triple jump (35-7 1/2) as well as fourth in the long jump (16-8) while Mara Siewko was fifth in the high jump, Sophia Doumas (111-feet) was fourth in the discus, Amanda Schneider was fourth in the 400 (59.66) and Green came in sixth in the 800.
Masco’s girls 4×400 was fifth while for the Chieftain boys, Adam Staffier placed sixth in the low hurdles (58.67) and Arbri Halilaj was sixth in the 200 (22.87).
Division 4
At Westfield State, Danvers’ distance crew shined with Sean Moore running a 4:19 mile for third and Will Conklin clocking 4:21 for fourth. The pair pulled off a double with Conklin fourth in the 2-mile (9:34) and Moore fifth (9:40).
Tim Bowler also placed ninth in the javelin (142-02). For the Falcon girls, the 4×100 relay of Tess Ryan, Kendall Murphy, Sabina Sturgeon, and DeAnna Figueiredo placed tenth in 52.07 and Bobbi Serino ran a 5:27 mile (13th).
Division 5
Swampscott’s Caleb Leopaldo won a silver medal in the shot put in D5 competition at Bridgewater State, throwing 46-feet-10 3/4 inches. The Big Blue’s boys 4×800 relay of Hunter Hersey, Anthony Colella, Simon Brown and James Kimbro placed fifth in 8:34.85 and Jamila Oriakhi was eighth in the girls shot put (33-3 1/2).
