Ahead of the Labor Day weekend, as millions of New Yorkers take to the roads for end-of-summer travel, the New York State Troopers PBA is issuing a holiday weekend reminder to follow the state’s Move Over Law, which requires drivers to slow down and move over when approaching emergency and other authorized vehicles stopped along the roadway.
“As we head into Labor Day weekend, troopers will be out in force protecting New York’s roadways, just as they do every single day, often putting themselves directly in harm’s way to keep others safe,” said New York State Troopers PBA President Charles W. Murphy. “Too many of our members have been forced into life-threatening situations during routine traffic stops simply because a driver didn’t exercise the necessary caution. Move Over is not a suggestion. It’s the law. We want every family celebrating this holiday weekend to reach their destination safely, and that only happens when drivers uphold their responsibility to slow down and move over.”
Struck-by incidents — when a law enforcement officer is hit by a motorist while working outside their patrol vehicle — are one of the leading causes of injury-related death in policing.
Over Labor Day Weekend in 2025, Troopers issued nearly 1,300 tickets for Move Over violations, part of more than 131,000 traffic tickets issued statewide over the holiday weekend.
“We can all agree that arriving to your destination a few minutes late is well worth the lives that will be saved,” Murphy said. “Our message to drivers is simple: slow down, move over and stay safe.”
