The Daily Star’s Athlete of the Week Award returns for its spring season.
The Athlete of the Week nominations for the week of April 12-18, are:
Chelsey Clegg, Edmeston/Morris softball: Clegg, a senior outfielder at Edmeston, had a home run to help Edmeston/Morris beat host Laurens/Milford in a Tri-Valley League game Thursday, April 16. Clegg had two hits, scored two runs and had an RBI in the 15-5 win.
Carley Mistler, Oneonta softball: Mistler, a seventh grader, had a big week to help the Yellowjackets continue their good start to the season. She threw a three-hitter against Norwich on Saturday, April 18, to lead her team to the finals of the Sidney Federal Credit Union Tournament. Against Sidney in the finals, she had a hit and scored a run. She had an RBI in a 7-4 win over Chenango Valley on Friday, April 17. She also got the pitching win against Owego on Wednesday, April 15, striking out six batters on a four hitter, while getting two hits, an RBI and scoring a run.
Ivy Tice, Deposit/Hancock softball: Tice, a junior at Hancock, has started the season strong. She struck out 17 batters in a one-hitter during an 8-0 win over host Harpursville on Thursday, April 16. She also doubled and drove in two runs. In an 18-1 win over Walton/Downsville on Tuesday, April 14, Tice homer twice including a grand slam as she had six RBI and scored three runs.
Xander Johnson, Unatego/Franklin baseball: Johnson, a Unatego senior, threw a five-inning no hitter while striking out 11 batters in an 19-0 win over host Bainbridge-Guilford on Friday, April 17. Johnson had four RBI on two doubles. During a 15-1 win over Edmeston/Morris in Morris on Wednesday, April 15, Johnson homered, scored two runs and had three RBI. On Monday, April 13, Johnson threw a two-hitter and struck out 10 batters in a 14-2 win over visiting Sidney. He also scored three runs.
Braden Rawitch, Cooperstown baseball: Rawitch, a sophomore, pitched Cooperstown to its first victory of the season Wednesday, April 15. Rawitch had a one hitter in a 2-0 win at Poland, striking out nine batters while walking none in seven innings.
Nolan Stark, Oneonta baseball: Oneonta’s strong start on the diamond has been aided by Stark’s big week. Monday, April 13, Stark pitched Oneonta to a 3-1 win over Owego. He had nine strikeouts and gave up four hits. The next day, in a 7-6 loss to Seton, Stark had three RBI. Thursday, April 16, Stark homered in Oneonta’s 10-0 win over Cobleskill-Richmondville. Saturday, April 18, Stark homered again, although the Yellowjackets lost to Class AA Eastport-South Manor, 4-2.
