The choir of St. John’s Gloucester will sing Evensong at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 12, at the church, 48 Middle Street. All are welcome.
Choral Evensong is an historic liturgy that first appeared in the Book of Common Prayer in 1549. Usually held near sunset, Evensong is a contemplative service that helps people transition from the busyness of the day to the peace of evening.
“When you come to Evensong, you will be dropping in on a conversation between God and God’s people that began long before you were born and will continue long after you die,” said the Rev. Marya DeCarlen, priest-in-collaboration at St. John’s.
“For a brief moment you step into the continual stream of worship which is being offered here today and will be offered to the end of time,” she said. “Please join us.”
The choir will sing the major portions of the liturgy, including “This Little Light of Mine” by Ronald Turner (b. 1946) and “Te Deum” by William Jackson (1730-1803).
A second Choral Evensong will be held at St. John’s on Wednesday, April 9, at 6 p.m.
