The Spring Place Ruritan Club and the Spring Place Historic Township are again sponsoring a cleanup day in the community on Saturday, July 20.
Volunteers will gather at the Lucy Hill Spring at 9 a.m. to divide into teams to clean out the spring and spruce up the grounds on Lucy Hill School Street which is off Ellijay Street. Other teams will then spread out over Ellijay and Elm streets to pick up litter to make the town look better for special events like Vann House Day on July 27 and the Spring Place Festival on Aug. 17.
Participants are asked to bring grabbers, tools, waders and any other equipment to help rake, trim, cut, clean out, pick up, etc. For more information, contact Tim Howard at (706) 280-5535 or howardtim@windstream.net.
Spring Place was the home of the first Christian mission to the Cherokees, site of a removal fort during the Trail of Tears and then the first county seat for Murray County. One of the most historic towns in the area, it is designated a Georgia Historic Township and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places — and it all started with a spring!
