Matt Costa erupted for five goals and added two assists, and was named the Gardner Holiday Tournament MVP as he led the Hillies to the tournament title.
“The kids played very well throughout the entire tournament,” said first-year head coach Adam Hurrell. “It was a well-rounded team effort. This is a great way to start the season and hopefully a sign of things to come.”
Haverhill (3-1) also received strong performances from Nolan Sheehan (1 goal, 2 assists), Rocco Belfiore (1 goal, 3 assists), Tim Rosenthal (1 goal), Ethan Jalbert (2 assists), Nolan Allen (1 assist) and Bobby Caron (1 assist). Max Boyer turned away 22 of 23 shots in net.

Timberlane/Pelham 1
In the Warrior Hockey Tournament, Justin Keogh scored the lone goal for the Owls. Timberlane/Pelham will face Nashua on Tuesday on Tuesday at 1:40 p.m., and then Merrimack on Wednesday at noon.

Grady Stickney continued his torrid scoring to start the season with a hat trick. Owen Barnitski had the other. Colin Brown, Tommy Pouro, Stickney and Logan Pickering each had an assist. Vincenzo Foster made 34 saves in net to earn the win.

Barrington, R.I. 1
At the Heuchling & Swift Memorial Classic at UNH, Michael Saab, Matteo Marra and Jason Vigeant had single goals, while Nick Lamb, Coen Gordon and Johnny Barbarossa dished out single assists.
Goalie Tanner Moody made 22 saves to earn the victory.
Pinkerton will play its final game of the tournament on Tuesday.
Boys Basketball
Haverhill 79, Leominster 60
In the semi-finals of the IAABO Board 95 Tournament in Westford, the Hillies’ combination of Alejandro Iraheta (24 points) and Joshua Harrington (21 points) were too much for Leominster. Jonzel Contreras added 11 points and Nate Harrington chipped in with eight.
Haverhill will play Lowell for the title on Tuesday night (7:15 p.m.).
Pelham 53, Fitchburg 44
In a consolation round game of the same Westford tournament, the Pythons had three players end in double figures with Brady Hegan and Brady O’Connor with 14 each, and Luke Estell with 13.
Pelham will play Merrimack, N.H. at 3:45 p.m.
Dover 63, Timberlane 34
Matt Fitzgerald had 16 points to lead the way in the consolation round of the Oyster River Holiday Tournament. Fitzgerald and Cam Stevens were named to All-Tournament team.

In the first round of the Amesbury Christmas Tournament, Whittier Tech edged out the Lancers behind 19 points from Yakaylah Ortiz (13 points), Nevaeha Wilkins (13) and Nakisha Lopez (10).
For Lawrence, Altagracia Maria Nunez finished with a game high 19 points, while Lilyanna Centeno added 11 and Yeira Davila was the third player in double figures with ten.
Whittier will play host Amesbury for the championship title at 3 p.m., and before that in the consolation game, it will be Lawrence and Randolph (1 p.m.).
Exeter 39, Salem 36
In the final day of the Derryfield Holiday tournament, the Blue Devils (5-1) fell for the first time this season in the championship game despite the strong play from Morgann Raskow with 17 points and Makayla Burns with seven.
