Amesbury running New England discus
Two of the top collegiate discus throwers in New England hail from Amesbury.
Last weekend at the NEICAAA Outdoor Championships, UMass Amherst freshman and former Redhawk Aiden Donovan placed both sixth in the shot put (16.35m, 53-7.75), and seventh in the discus (48.34m, 158-7). And in a cool moment, he got to compete against former Amesbury teammate Max LaPointe, a junior at the University of New Hampshire who is finally healthy after battling injuries each of his first two years. LaPointe, our 2022 Daily News Outdoor Track MVP, recorded a personal-record throw (50.72m, 166-5) to place fourth in the discus.
It was the end of quite the freshman season for Donovan.
Our 2023 and ‘24 Daily News Outdoor Track MVP, Donovan was named to the A10 ALL-Rookie Team as well as All-Conference. During the A10 Outdoor Championships held at George Mason University, he set a new UMass freshman record in the shot put to place second (16.377m, 53-8.50), while also placing second in the discus (48.60m, 159-5).
And also at the A10 Championship, fellow Amesbury native and UMass Amherst freshman Michael Sanchez set a new personal record in the 200 meter dash (22.11).

White’s current estimated time of arrival in the MLB is 2026.
24th annual Trav’s Trail Run
The 24th annual Trav’s Trail Run will take place this Sunday, May 18th, at 10:30 a.m. at Maudslay State Park. As always, 100% of the race profits will go to the Travis Landreth Scholarship Fund to support student athletes and to the Friends of Newburyport Track.
The beloved race honors the memory of Travis Landreth, a former three-season Newburyport runner who was an All-Scholastic athlete in high school, and went on to be an All-American runner at UConn.
Registration for the race is available at: Joppaflatsrunningclub.com.
Captains Corner
Captains Corner submissions are now being accepted for the 2025 spring season. A couple have already rolled in, but there are still plenty of local sports teams that haven’t been submitted. Coaches — or parents or the athletes themselves — who would like their captains featured are welcome to submit a photo to kgaudette@newburyportnews.com. Photos should have all captains featured and ideally be in their jerseys.
