Huskies defeated in Frozen Four
The fifth-seeded Northeastern women’s hockey team fell to the No. 1 and top-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes, 5-0, on Friday evening in the NCAA Women’s Frozen Four Semifinals at Pegula Ice Arena.
Senior Lily Shannon of Andover and senior Mia Langlais of Windham both played major roles in the team’s success. Shannon finished the season with 19 goals and 24 assists, and Langlois also played in all 39 games and finished with a goal and four assists, while blocking 12 shots.
To get to the Final-4, NU (29-9-1), defeated No. 4 Minnesota. Before that, the Huskies defeated BU and Vermont before losing to UConn, 2-1, in double overtime in the Hockey East Championship game.
Burt to start season AAA Toledo
North Andover native Max Burt will be headed to the Detroit Tigers AAA affiliate, the Toledo Mud Hens, to open the 2026 season.
Burt, who was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 28th round in 2018, signed to a minor league contract with the Tigers just before spring training opened.
Burt, a 2014 graduate of St. John’s Prep before spending a successful four-year career at Northeastern University, starting a school record 224 games, had played 582 games with the historic organization.
The 29-year-old had two AAA stints with the Yankees team in Scranton, Pa.
Raiders name new boys soccer coach
In addition to recently naming a new baseball and football coach, Central Catholic High Athletic Director Zach Blaszek has announced that Dimitrios Petrides is the new head varsity boys’ soccer coach.
Petrides has coached at the high school and club level. He was an assistant at Medford for six seasons before serving as the head coach of the NEFC North Shore club team.
Senior All-Star Game
On Sunday, the Massachusetts State Coaches Hockey Association/Hockey Night in Boston Senior boys and girls all-star games were held. On the girls’ side, playing for Team North were Central Catholic teammates Maeve O’Sullivan and Molly Boyden, Methuen/Tewksbury teammates Ella Duffy and Lydia Barnes, and Mia Kmiec, a member of the HPNA team.
Sports Trivia Night
The Michael P. Ippolito Scholarship Foundation has announced that it will be hosting a Sports Trivia Night on Friday, April 10th, from 6-10 p.m. at the Friendship Lodge in Wilmington. The cost is $25 per person. Pizza will be provided, along with raffles, a DJ and dancing.
Ippolito spent 20 years as a sports reporter at the Wilmington/Tewksbury Town Crier before passing away in 2022. During his time with the paper, he covered Methuen/Tewksbury swim and girls’ hockey teams.
All proceeds will fund six scholarships for high school students from Wilmington High, Tewksbury High, and Shawsheen Tech.
