Scialdone picks up honor
Drew Scialdone is already earning awards as a freshman for the University of Southern Maine baseball team.
The Amesbury native was just named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week, after starting all four games as the designated hitter for the Huskies (10-14). During that stretch, Scialdone went a scalding 7-for-12 at the plate with two runs scored and a triple. He had three multi-hit games out of the four, including a 3-for-5 effort against Colby College. In a 12-0 win over Plymouth State he went 2-for-2 with a run scored, and in a split at Eastern Connecticut he went 2-for-5 with the triple.
For the season, Scialdone has now played in seven games and is hitting .471 (8-for-17) with three walks and an RBI.
Kimball still dealing at HobartSpeaking of former Amesbury baseball stars, it took Trevor Kimball just one year to turn into the “ace” for Hobart and William Smith College.
Last spring, the 6-foot-2 lefty and 2023 Daily News MVP led the Statesmen in strikeouts with 40, and was also third on the team in innings pithed (35.2) and second in wins (3). Now as a sophomore, Kimball has made seven starts so far this year for Hobart (14-10), and is 2-1 with a 3.67 ERA and a team-high 32 strikeouts in 34.1 innings pitched. Prior to getting roughed up a bit during his last outing at Rensselaer, Kimball held a 1.64 ERA with four starts lasting at least six innings.
That includes six shutout innings with seven strikeouts in a win at Farmingdale State, as well as two one-run performances across six innings against Colby Sawyer and Rochester.
Forrest, too!The Hobart baseball team has a second local athlete starring for it this spring in Charlie Forrest, and the Newburyport native has turned into a lockdown reliever.
Also a sophomore, the 6-foot-3 righty has made seven relief appearances so far for the Statesmen (14-10), and is yet to allow a run. Forrest has totalled 7.2 innings pitched over his seven stints, and has surrendered just four hits to go against five strikeouts and just one walk.

Captains Corner
Captains Corner submissions are now being accepted for the 2025 spring season. A couple have already rolled in, but there are still plenty of local sports teams that haven’t been submitted. Coaches — or parents or the athletes themselves — who would like their captains featured are welcome to submit a photo to kgaudette@newburyportnews.com. Photos should have all captains featured and ideally be in their jerseys.
