Reade was ready for college jump
Aine Reade is already making an impact at the college level.
The Merrimac native and former Pentucket student is a freshman on the University of New Hampshire women’s gymnastics team, and already just picked up her first major honor. Reade was recently named the Rookie of the Week in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League, and certainly for good reason.
Reade debuted as a Wildcat by tallying the team’s highest score on bars and second-best score on both the vault and floor. Her 9.800 floor exercise earned a share of fifth place, and she also posted a fifth-place-tying score of 9.750 on the vault during meets against UPenn and Minnesota. She also competed from the anchor spot on both vault and bars, earning scores of 9.750 and 9.675, respectively.
Eiserman nets
first hat-trick
Cole Eiserman continues to dazzle in his first — and probably only — year playing hockey for Boston University. The Newburyport native recorded his first collegiate hat-trick this weekend in a victory over Vermont, and is now leading the team in goals with 12 while also adding 7 assists.
The Terriers (11-7-1) are currently ranked No. 8 in the latest Pairwise rankings, and are well in line to make the NCAA Division I tournament. Of course, Eiserman was the 20th overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, and will have the chance to join the New York Islanders as soon as his collegiate season is over.
Bombs Away!
We knew this coming into the season.
But if you’re a fan of basketball analytics and the increase in 3-point shot attempts, then the Georgetown boys are your team to watch this year. So far, the Royals (4-2) have made 63 total 3s across just six games, which is good for an average of 10.5 per contest. Brady Kent leads the way with 15, followed by Irvin Zapata with 14, Jack Duggan with 10 and Jalen Andujar with 9.
The next closest would be the Amesbury boys, who have 61 made 3s across eight games (7.6 per). The Newburyport boys are averaging 7.1 made 3s per game (64 total across 9), led primarily by the area’s leading shooter, Cal Atherton, who has 22.
Tatro heating up
The Salem State men’s hockey team is in the middle of a five-game winning streak, and it comes as no surprise that it’s coincided with forward James Tatro heating up. The Salisbury native and former two-sport Triton standout has 4 goal and 2 assists during this run for the Vikings (8-4), and for the season sits at 7 goals with 6 assists.
There’s also rumor that the Salem State lacrosse coach is lobbying to get Tatro to come out for the team this spring.
Captains Corner
Captains Corner submissions are now being accepted for the 2024-25 winter season. A couple have already rolled in, but there are still plenty of local sports teams that haven’t been submitted. Coaches — or parents or the athletes themselves — who would like their captains featured are welcome to submit a photo to kgaudette@newburyportnews.com. Photos should have all captains featured and ideally be in their jerseys.
