Georgetown has a chance
At bare minimum, it was a memorable night.
With seniors Joshua Canton, Ryan Church, Max Medwid and Cole Healy setting the tone, the Georgetown boys soccer team earned a 4-0 shutout of Triton during Monday’s Senior Night. Zach Pinkham powered the offense with a hat-trick while Medwid also scored and had an assist, and Aidan Beqiraj and Bryce Hodges had helpers as well.
But bigger picture, the victory might have prolonged the program’s season. Georgetown (3-14-1) was ranked No. 33 in the latest Division 5 power rankings released on Tuesday, and will now wait to see if it bumps up the one necessary spot when the official field is announced later this week.
Silva, short-handed Govs nearly pull stunner
The Governor’s Academy football team had to adapt.
First, it was All-League running back Dawson DuBose going down with a season-ending broken leg a few weeks ago. Then last week, it was backup Campbell Morrison going down on the second play, along with starting QB Aiden Bly getting banged up as well.
And who does Governor’s draw the week after taking all of those injuries?
Undefeated powerhouse BB&N.
But with the cards stacked against them, the Govs nearly pulled off a stunner.
Tony Silva stepped in as a wildcat QB, and Governor’s almost took down BB&N in what ended up being a 40-38 loss on Saturday. All told, Silva had 181 yards on 30 carries with a touchdown and three 2-point conversions, while also completing 2-of-5 passes for 36 yards and two more scores to Seven Pridgen. Star receiver Kyrstian Pothel moved over to running back and had 121 yards on 13 carries with a TD, and Charles Cochran picked up 47 yards on seven totes and found the endzone as well.
Tykulsky takes care of business
The Newburyport girls soccer team will enter the upcoming Division 3 state tournament on a high note.
Monday evening, Daily News All-Star forward Aoife Tykulsky scored both goals to lead the Clippers to a 2-0 victory over St. Mary’s in their regular season finale. Sevilla Coffin and Natalie DeGraves had the assists, and junior goalie Chloe Raby made six saves to post the shutout.
Newburyport (12-3-3) was ranked No. 10 in the latest Div. 3 poll.
Ketschke, Miller catch TDs
The Pentucket football team still managed some highlights during Friday’s loss to North Reading, 31-12.
Top among them was receiver Aaron Ketschke continuing his fantastic senior year, hauling in six passes for 75 yards and a touchdown. Junior QB Steven Harper completed 15-of-26 passes for 138 yards and two scores, the other going to fellow junior Jackson Miller. Harper also led the team on the ground with 42 yards on eight carries. The Panthers (2-5) will end their regular season hosting Ipswich this week.
Captains Corner
Captains Corner submissions are still being accepted for the 2024 fall season. A large amount have rolled in, but there are still plenty of local sports teams that haven’t been submitted. Coaches — or parents or the athletes themselves — who would like their captains featured are welcome to submit a photo to kgaudette@newburyportnews.com. Photos should have all captains featured and ideally be in their jerseys.
