Lucy nails second ace
Former North Andover High golfer and hockey player, Matthew Lucy, hit his second career hole in one a month ago at Cape Arundel Golf Club in Kennebunkport, Me.
Lucy, who graduated from UMass Amherst with a degree in finance in 2022, nailed a wedge on the 118-yard sixth hole at the same course former President George Bush is a current member.
Lucy captained both hockey and golf teams at NAHS.
NECC Hall of Fame looks for nominations
Nominations remain open throughout year, however to be considered for the Class of 2026 nominations are due by Dec. 22, 2025. All nominations received will remain in consideration future years if not selected for the March 2026 induction ceremony.
The 2026 Hall of Fame Class will be announced in the first week of January with induction taking place on Thurs., March 5, 2026 in the Hartleb Technology Center on the Haverhill campus.
Criteria for nominations and selection:
Candidates must have distinguished themselves through outstanding achievement in intercollegiate athletics. Candidates must have graduated from Northern Essex and/or continued their athletic participation professionally or at a four-year institution five or more years ago while maintaining satisfactory academic standing according to the standards of the college.
Similarly, outstanding athletic teams and distinguished members of the NECC coaching staff are also eligible for selection and membership. Any coach or administrator must have retired or departed from the college at least five years prior to his or her nomination.
While athletic achievement is of prime importance, character and good citizenship will be taken into consideration. The record of the individual or athletic team must be so outstanding that there are no questions of qualifying for the Athletic Hall of Fame.
Niang could be back soon
Methuen native Georges Niang, now with the Utah Jazz, is still on the injured list, having not played yet this season.
The 6-foot-8 forward is currently dealing with a left foot injury — slight stress fracture — which was diagnosed in September before the open of Jazz’ training camp.
He is expected to return some time this month based on the evaluation of his foot injury.
Niang, who was traded to the Jazz from the Celtics, though never played instead having his contract moved to the Jazz.
NESCAC honors for Brockelman, Williams
A pair of local athletes have finished their careers being honored for the their sportsmanship.
Ella Brockelman, of Andover, a senior at Colby College, was on the field hockey team, while Justice McGrail, of Methuen, a senior for Williams College football were both among 60 fall NESCAC athletes honored.
Brockelman scored a goal and assist as a senior while McGrail, who played at Central Catholic, was a defensive back who also played wide receiver. In fact he had four of his career eight receptions in the finale loss to Amherst, 14-13.
Legend Johnny Bucyk in Methuen
Former Boston Bruins great and Hockey Hall of Famer Johnny Bucyk will be signing autographs on Sun., Dec. 7 at the Methuen Monthly Sports Card Show at VFW Hall on 26 River Street.
The cost is $20 per autograph ($5 inscriptions). Photo ops are $5.
