Nelson excels in first start
Bradford native Tyler Nelson, of Central Catholic and Fairfield University fame, got his first start with his new team in the Greek Basketball League and it paid off.
Nelson scored a game-high 22 points, including 6 of 12 from 3-point territory, for Kolossos HH in their loss to Olympiacos, 88-73.
Nelson went head-to-head a bit with former Celtic, Evan Fournier, who only took one shot, going scoreless with five assists, in 18 minutes of action.
Nelson had averaged about 5.5 points per game off the bench before his big outing on Sunday.
He has hit an impressive 17 of 34 (50%) from 3-point territory.
Big weekend for Merrimack basketballThe Merrimack College men’s basketball team will host Boston University on Friday at 7 p.m. at Lawler Arena.
Both teams come in hot with Merrimack on a three-game winning streak and B.U. winners of three of its last four.
The Merrimack women’s team travels to Providence on Saturday for a noon game at Alumni Hall.
Merrimack, 4-3, has won three of four while the Friars, 6-5, have won three straight.
Efosa leads Providence womenBy the way, the Merrimack women’s basketball team will probably be focusing on a local talent on Saturday, as former Whittier Tech star Grace Efosa, is off to a great start for the Friars team as the only player scoring in double figures at 16.8 points per game.
The 5-foot-11 guard is in her graduate year and has improved each year.
We will be monitoring the Lawrence resident’s season.
Clark wins award again
Adam “Budd” Clark was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Week for the second straight week.
Clark led Merrimack in scoring in both of its MAAC wins last week. Clark scored 22 points in the Warriors victory over Canisius and 18 points in the Merrimack win over Niagara. He also averaged 6.5 assists in the two games, dishing out a season-high nine assists against Niagara on Sunday afternoon. The point guard from Philly also went a perfect 16-of-16 from the free throw line over the two contests.
He ranks first in the conference in scoring with 19.9 points per game. Clark ranks first in the conference in assists with 4.9 per contest. He is in the top three for steals and in the top two in free throw percentage so far this season. The sophomore point guard averages 36.6 minutes per game, which is best in the MAAC.
Jack Edwards in Methuen
Former Boston Bruins NESN play-by-play announcer Jack Edwards will be signing autographs this Sun., Jan 5, 2025 at the VFW Hall in Methuen.
The long-time announcer will be at the monthly Sports Card Show event at 26 River Street signing from 10 a.m. until noon. The autographs cost $15 with inscriptions and photo ops each costing $5. Mail-ins cost $15.
The card show runs from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. with over 40 dealer tables of sports memorabilia.
