Morrier honored after big week
Former Timberlane Regional High soccer star Leah Morrier has continued her success at the collegiate level. The Rivier University sophomore was named the GNAC Player of the Week after scoring four goals in two wins over New England College and University of Saint Joseph (Conn).
Morrier has now extended her multi-goal streak to four consecutive games and recorded 17 shots on the week, 13 of which were on target. She currently ranks second in the GNAC in goals (14), points (35), and shots on goal (38), is tied for second in assists (7), and sits third in total shots (62).
Besides Morrier, there’s three other local players on the team including Derry’s Samantha Franks (5-4-9), Salem’s Meg O’Callaghan (0-1-1) and Windham’s Shaye Schackelman. Also, Kendrick Whittle, who was previously the Salem High girls coach, is one of the team’s assistant coaches.
Caruso making a splash
Haverhill resident Sophia Caruso was named the GNAC Rookie of the Week as a member of the Regis College women’s swim team. Caruso led the Pride at the USJ Pentathalon finishing just outside the top 10 in 11th place with a total time of3:17.57 — just 0.48 seconds shy of cracking the top ten.
Caruso also posted a personal best in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 25.25, moving up to ninth all-time in program history.
Tardugno also earns honors
Western New England field hockey goalkeeper Alex Tardugno, of Methuen, has received honors from the Conference of New England as CNE Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week.
In the 2-1 overtime victory over MIT, Tardugno faced 14 shots, making 13 total saves, allowing just one goal over 68 minutes played, leading the Golden Bears to the win. She then came up with ten saves in a win over Johnson & Wales.
The all-time saves leader at MHS, Tardugno has a 10-6 record with a 1.28 GAA. She has 85 saves on the season with six shutouts.
Bay State Marathon
On Sunday, the annual Bay State Marathon and half-marathon road race was held in Lowell. In the marathon, Andover’s Matthew Kiesz was the top local finisher, placing 34th in 2:48.39.7. He was followed by Andover’s Sylvain Olier (63rd, 2:51.07) and Sam LoPriesti (86th, 2:56.00.8), Lawrence’s Ronald Motta (115th, 2:58.20) and North Andover’s Gustavo Castro (128th, 2:59.51.6).
On the women’s side, the top local finisher was North Andover’s Sarah Aponte (234th, 3:15.20.2). She was followed by Andover residents Rebecca Zoss (3:33.50.9) and Caitlin Castagna (3:34.19.2), Lawrence’s Hannah Brisson (3:40.55.5)and Haverhill’s Judy DeLeon (3:57.58.2).
In the half marathon, Derry’s Cayla Pellegrini was the top local finisher coming in 26th in 1:22.35.1. She was followed by: Methuen’s Brady Morris (34th, 1:24.35.3), Andover’s Phil Geoffrey (44th, 1:25.27.5), Methuen’s Dominic Privitera (48th, 1:25.51.7) and Lawrence’s Jess Bourbeau (89th, 1:31.40.7).
Daccord off to strong start
North Andover’s Joey Daccord is off to a strong start as the goalie of the Seattle Kraken. He is currently 3-1 with a 3.09 GAA, which includes wins over Anaheim on opening night with 36 saves, and then a 30-save performance in a road win at Toronto.
