Methuen track captains
The Methuen boys indoor track team has announced its captains for the 2023-24 season — Anthony Danella, Ibrahima Ba, Adrian Blake, Mekhi Lumsden and Josh Kwakye.
Blake, Kwakye and Ba were all starters for the Rangers football team in the fall. Ba was also an Eagle-Tribune All-Star 400-meter hurdler last spring, placing fourth at MVCs (1:00.26), and teamed with Lumsden in the 4×400 relay.
The legend continues
There must be something in the name.
One of the finalist for the 2023 National Sports Media Association Maine Sportswriter of the Year is a writer with a name very familiar to sports fans in this region — Dave Dyer.
The namesake of the beloved Eagle-Tribune sportswriter that passed away last month — there appears to be no connection between the two — this Dyer is a Maine native that writes for the Kennebec Journal/Morning Sentinel.
No news if he also goes by “Duffy” like our Dave did.
Big-time looks
Andover star senior defensive back/receiver Brian Hnat and sophomore running Dante Berger we’re both in attendance for the Boston College Football Recruit Day Game, according to posts on “X” the platform formally known as Twitter.
Both are highly intriguing prospects.
Haverhill hockey 50th
The Haverhill High boys hockey program will celebrate it’s 50th anniversary on Feb. 17. Alumni and fans are invited to celebrate the program’s rich history, from the early days to the current era coached by Joe Roberts.
For more information, contact former Hillies head coach Spike Sprague at richsprg@aol.com.
Harris battling injury
Montreal Canadiens defenseman Jordan Harris of Haverhill has been out of late due to a lower body injury. He has not played since Nov. 18. For the season, he has tallied three assists in 16 games. He was averaging 18.6 minutes of ice time per game.
Captains Corner
As the fall sports season comes to an end, and the spring season is just getting underway, we at The Eagle-Tribune still want to honor the area’s high school captains as part of our Captains Corner series. Coaches — or parents or the athletes themselves — who would like their captains featured are welcome to submit a photo to dwillis@eagletribune.com. Photos should have all captains featured and ideally in uniform.
One Final Thought
As Michael Muldoon used to say, “If you can bring a smile to someone’s face today, just do it!
