Wolinski vs. Crosgove in D3 Final Four
The Div. 3 men’s Final Four has a little bit of Merrimack Valley flavor as it begins on Thursday in the semifinals when Wesleyan University (30-1) meets NESCAC rival, Trinity College (28-3), in Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Ind.
North Andover’s Zach Wolinski, a freshman, will be coming off the bench for Wesleyan while former Andover resident, Jamie Cosgrove, is head coach at Trinity.
The two teams have a nice recent history with Wesleyan beating Trinity back on Jan. 25, 72-63, but it was Trinity on top in the NESCAC championship game, 75-67. It was Wesleyan’s only loss.
Trinity’s run has been mighty, winning by an average of 18 points in their four NCAA tourney games. Wesleyan, after three dominating wins by an average of 19 points per game, got to Fort Wayne with a thrilling, 61-58 win overtime over Emory University.
Wolinksi has been a two-time Eagle-Tribune “Super-teamer” with the Knights. As for Cosgrove, he is 245-137 over 15 seasons with the Bantams and 484-264 overall.
Moody fifth at NCAA Indoors
North Andover’s Samirah Moody, a former star at BB&N, finished fifth in the 60-meters at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Virginia Beach Sports Center in Virginia Beach, Va. over the weekend representing U.S.C.
It was a close final, with Dajaz Defrand, her teammate, finishing first at 7.09. The next three times were 7.12, 7.15 and 7.17. In fact, Moody was also 7.17 but was named fifth.
Her P.R. in the 60 meter dash is 7.07, from two years ago. She will be running in the 100 meter and 4X100 relay this spring.
Roche, Babson off to hot start
Rookie Babson College softball coach Tori Roche, an Andover native, has her team off to a nice start on its Florida trip.
Babson is 4-2 with an off day yesterday, resuming today against two powerhouse Div. 3 programs, New Palz College and No. 3 ranked Rowan.
Roche is the first-ever woman to coach the softball team.
