LaLime leading Governor’s Academy
The Governor’s Academy football team wasn’t able to get into the win column this past weekend, traveling over to undefeated St. Mark’s and losing, 35-14.
But in defeat, Portsmouth, N.H. native Porter LaLime continued to star out of the backfield, finishing the game with 198 rushing yards on 20 carries to go along with a touchdown. The junior has now carried the rock 54 times for 385 yards (7.1 per carry) and two TDs through the team’s opening four games of the season, while also being a hard-hitting starting linebacker on defense.
Governor’s (0-4) will try to pick up its first win when it hosts Thayer Academy (2-2) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Stallard seeing action at Saint Anselm
Hard to believe, but Newburyport native Lucas Stallard is now a senior on the Saint Anselm College football team.
And this weekend, the former Daily News All-Star got into the stat sheet for the first time this season, recording a tackle in the team’s 21-0 shutout of Franklin Pierce University. Stallard appeared in seven games and made three tackles a year ago, and now has played in five games this fall for the red-hot Hawks (4-2), who are winners of three straight.
No stopping Ragusa, Tufts field hockey
Not surprising at all to see Lilly Ragusa continuing to star in the college field hockey ranks.
The Newburyport native and our 2022 Daily News MVP is now a junior at Tufts University, which is currently ranked No. 7 in the country in NCAA Division III. The midfielder has started all 12 games this fall for the Jumbos (10-2), and is tied for third on the team with 4 goals while also adding 2 assists.
During the team’s huge 3-1 win over No. 5-ranked Bates this past weekend, Ragusa had a secondary assist off a corner entry.
LeDuc earning more time at Assumption
Now a sophomore, Lily LeDuc is earning double the playing time this fall for the Assumption University volleyball team.
Another year removed from a knee injury that kept her out her entire senior year at Newburyport High, the former Daily News All-Star has already played in 13 matches (as opposed to six last year) and is sixth on the team with 59 total kills. She had a season-high 13-kill game against Queens College, then another 11-kill night against Frostburg State.
LeDuc’s younger sister, Ellie, is a junior playing for the red-hot Clippers (13-3), who are currently ranked No. 10 in Division 3.
Captains Corner
The high school sports fall preseason is officially underway, and we at The Newburyport News want to again honor the area’s high school captains as part of our Captains Corner series. Coaches — or parents or the athletes themselves — who would like their captains featured are welcome to submit a photo to kgaudette@newburyportnews.com. Photos should have all captains featured and ideally in uniform.
