Former Andover High great engaged
Congrats are in order for former Andover High and Babson College two-sport sensation Tori Roche.
This past weekend, Tori was engaged to now-fiancee Frank Roche, with family present in Boston.
Tori was also a two-sport captain at Babson and one of the best defensive catchers in Div. 3 in New England.
She is currently an assistant field hockey coach at Boston University.
Methuen’s Owen Sullivan dominant in outing
It hasn’t taken former Methuen High star pitcher Owen Sullivan to start turning heads in college.
Two weeks after allowing seven earned runs in two innings, the former Rangers closer shut down Albertus Mangus College, 5-0, going eight innings.
Sullivan allowed seven hits while striking out a career-high 11, walking only two.
Sullivan is coming off a win in his last start last week, a 5-3 win over Lasell in which he allowed five hits and three runs over six innings.
Sullivan was tantamount in Methuen’s late season run last spring as its closer.
It appears Sullivan is finding his groove.
Merrimack hockey adds two from portal
Mack Report writer Mike McMahon says Merrimack College hockey received a commitment from Niagara center Jack Richard from the transfer portal. Richard had 10 goals and 11 assists for the Purple Eagles as a freshman this past season.
Richard is 6-foot-4, and he’s from Stoney Creek, Ont. According to Mike McMahon, he’ll be the tallest Merrimack forward since Hampus Gustafsson graduated in 2017.
Before Niagara, Richard was the captain of the Burlington Cougars (OJHL) in 2022-23. In 52 games, he scored 53 goals and added 35 assists for 88 points.
Former Lake Superior State defenseman Cam Kungle also committed to Merrimack out of the transfer portal.
The Warriors were looking to add a big, strong defenseman who can win battles down low and near the crease. Kungle is 6-foot-2 and averaged almost 18 minutes per game as a freshman for Lake Superior State last season.
In 37 games for the Lakers, Kungle had nine points (1g-8a). He was a +1 and had 33 PIMs.
Another nice run for Nelson
Bradford native Tyler Nelson had one of his best games of the year in the German First Division when the Rostock Seawolves needed it recently.
Nelson, averaging 15.8 points per game this year, scored 23 points, hitting five 3-pointers, in a 92-25 win over Tigers Tubingen.
It halted a 13-game losing streak. Rostock is 8-20 in 15th place in the 18-team league.
Two games later, Nelson scored 20 points in a 95-86 win over powerhouse Würzburg Baskets, which is 19-9.
Marathon by the numbers
The final stats are in from the 2024 Boston Marathon.
There were 29,333 entries — 16,714 men, 12,566 women.
Of those, 26,491 started in Hopkinton, 25,530 finished. Interestingly 437 men dropped out and 523 women dropped out. Pretty close.
By the way, there were 13 runners over 80 years old that started and 11 finished. How about that?
