Close pack of Huskies
The University of Southern Maine softball team still has a family feel to it.
That’s because helping to lead the Huskies yet again this spring are three good friends and former Amesbury standouts in Olivia Levasseur, Ella Bezanson and Alana DeLisle. After winning the Division 4 State Championship in 2022 with Amesbury, the trio are now juniors who are all key contributers for a Huskies (18-16) team looking to make a run in the upcoming Little East Conference Tournament.
Bezanson, an outfielder and Nursing major, is currently leading the team with a .288 average (30-for-104). She’s played in 32 games this year while starting 31 of them, and has 13 RBI, five doubles, three triples and a home run while also being a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen bases.
Meanwhile Levasseur, an infielder who is studying Criminology and Psychology, has basically started every game since arriving on campus three years ago, and is a perfect 34-for-34 this spring. She is hitting .234 (25-for-107) with three doubles and 13 RBI, and is also a perfect 6-for-6 on her stolen base attempts.
Finally, DeLisle has played in 31 games with 22 starts this year, and is batting .212 (14-for-56) with 11 runs scored. The fellow Nursing major is mainly playing in the outfield, but also has the ability to be an emergency pitcher.
Conover earns All-NE10 honor
Audrey Conover put in a lot of hard work this spring, and she was recently recognized for it.
The former Pentucket Regional lacrosse star — now a sophomore at Saint Michael’s College — was just named to the Northeast-10 All-Conference third team, as voted on by the league’s coaches. Conover was among eight third team midfielders selected, and totaled 27 goals, 9 assists, 41 draw controls, 28 ground balls and 21 caused turnovers for the Purple Knights (5-11). She is eighth in the NE10 in caused turnovers per game, while tying for 11th in total caused turnovers and placing 13th in ground ball average.
Conover contributed at least three points seven times this season, collecting 18 in the last four games alone. Through two collegiate years, she now has 37 career goals and 13 assists.
Newburyport Wall still taking nominations
The Newburyport Wall of Fame committee is still accepting nominations for the Class of 2025. Those interested in providing input can email Paula Jo Souliotis at: pjsoul629@yahoo.com.
Captains Corner
Captains Corner submissions are now being accepted for the 2025 spring season. A couple have already rolled in, but there are still plenty of local sports teams that haven’t been submitted. Coaches — or parents or the athletes themselves — who would like their captains featured are welcome to submit a photo to kgaudette@newburyportnews.com. Photos should have all captains featured and ideally be in their jerseys.
