CUMBERLAND — “We Are Not Alone!,” the latest book by local author Andrew Sparber, is a science fiction book for children.
“The goal of this children’s book is to interest children on local Cumberland, Maryland, history through a sci-fi story,” Sparber said.
Sparber used local collections of vintage photographs of the city and placed alien characters on those pictures.
The story focuses on the planet Radon, which is facing depopulation due to a virus that makes having offspring impossible.
One alien named Zachert is sent to Earth to find a cure but does not communicate back to the High Council for years due to technical difficulties and his forgetfulness. The aliens are able to become invisible or switch to human form. He finally reaches the council and shows them what he had been doing.
Out of frustration the council sends a crew of three aliens to Earth to see what is going on. They crash in Cumberland but finally locate Zachert. He proceeds to show them around the city but finally says he did not find a cure. The female crew member, Captain Patel, gives birth to a little girl named Gracey. Gradually, the earthlings become aware of the aliens and become friends with them.
