MOUNT SAVAGE — Bill Shreve and David Warder finished first in a field of 13 teams at the fourth annual Summer Fling Doubles Disc Golf tournament on Saturday.
The tournament, hosted by Mile Lane Disc Golf in Mount Savage, featured at least two rounds of 24 holes with the top three teams finishing with a six-hole championship round.
Shreve, of Cumberland, and Warder, of Fairmont, West Virginia,
Bill Shreve of Cumberland, MD, and David Warder of Fairmont, WV, topped a field of participants from Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.
The first round consisted of an alternate shot format.
After the 24 holes (par 74), Shreve and Warder led the way with a 14-under par score of 60.
Following two strokes behind were Scott Mallery, Mount Savage, and his son, Colby Mallery, Mount Savage, with a 12-under par score of 62, and third place husband/wife team Alex and Meghan Bishop of Hagerstown with a 10-under par round of 64.
Six teams competed in the general division, six in the mixed (adult and child or male and female) division, and one in the youth team. Noah Spradlin of Frostburg won the closest-to-the-pin contest. The afternoon round featured 24 holes in a best-shot format.
The Shreve-Warder team also posted the top scores for the second round: a 19-under-par score of 55. This score was followed by the Mallery duo and the team of Ethan von Hagel, Cumberland, and Sam Wolodkin, who both posted 17-under-par scores of 57.
These three teams moved to the six-hole championship round. During the second round, Ryan Bungard of Vianna, West Virginia, threw the only hole-in-one for the day.
After the second round, scores were combined and the top two teams from the mixed division were announced.
The Bishops prevailed in that division with a -25 score of 123 for the two rounds.
Teams of Natasha Scolaro, Martinsburg, West Virginia, Derrick Ames, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and brothers Josiah and Noah Spradlin, Frostburg, had a 48-hole total of 136 and finished tied for second in the mixed division.
The lone youth team, Luke Spradlin and Noah Davis, both of Frostburg, finished the tournament with a score of 143.
The six-hole championship layout was a 20-par. Shreve and Warder shot a 17, the Mallerys carded an 18, and von Hagel and Wolodkin finished with a 19. The standings remained the same, and Shreve and Warder took home the 2023 title with a 132 (-36) for the day. The Mallerys were second with a 137, and von Hagel and Wolodkin were third with a 141.
Disc Golf continues to grow in popularity in the Western Maryland region. Along with Mile Lane Disc Golf in Mount Savage, there are courses (private) at Central Assembly of God in Cumberland, Locust Post Brewery in Little Orleans, and the only public course in Allegany Couty, Hoffman Park in Frostburg.
Various leagues are offered for all skill levels by the Allegany County Disc Golf Club, Mile Land Disc Golf, and Western Maryland Disc Golf. Information for each group can be found on their individual Facebook pages.
