As the days grow cooler and the leaves begin to turn, September reminds us that change can be beautiful. While we often think of spring as the season of renewal, autumn brings its own kind of fresh start. For older adults, this is a wonderful time to pause, reflect and embrace new opportunities.
Many of us still associate September with “back to school” season. Even if it has been years since we carried a backpack, that feeling of starting anew lingers in the air. This month offers a chance to try something different — whether that’s picking up a new hobby, reconnecting with an old friend, joining a community program or simply taking a walk and enjoying the crisp fall air.
A fresh start doesn’t always mean big changes. Often, it’s the small steps that bring the most joy, connection, and purpose. Here are a few simple ways to make September a season of renewal — and how the Schoharie County Office for the Aging can help along the way.
Reconnect with your community. OFA coordinates senior dining centers across the county where older adults can enjoy a hot meal and good company in a warm, welcoming setting. Meals are served at:
• The Firehouse (Spa Ritz) in Sharon Springs; Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays
• The Community Center in Jefferson; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
• The Gathering Place in Cobleskill; Monday through Friday, with both “Grab-and-Go” and in-person dining options.
In addition, OFA hosts events and outreach programs that bring people together. You’ll find announcements on our Facebook page, in local newspapers or by calling our office.
Get moving. Cooler temperatures make September ideal for walking or gentle exercise. For those who prefer to stay indoors, free online platforms such as GetSetUp offer a wide range of health and wellness classes. (Be sure to talk to your doctor before starting any new exercise program.)
Learn something new. OFA partners with local organizations to provide educational programs, health workshops and support groups. Whether you’re curious about nutrition, interested in our Parkinson’s Support Group, looking to explore a new craft or hoping to gain confidence with technology, we can connect you with opportunities.
Prepare for the season ahead. As colder weather approaches, OFA staff can provide information about heating assistance programs, fall-prevention workshops, and resources to help keep your home safe and comfortable.
Stay connected. If you’re feeling isolated, OFA can link you with volunteer opportunities, caregiver support groups or programs like telephone reassurance and friendly visiting. Sometimes even the smallest connection makes the biggest difference.
At the Schoharie County Office for the Aging, we understand that transitions can feel daunting — but they also bring new possibilities. September is a perfect reminder that it’s never too late to begin again. Growth, learning, and meaningful connections can happen at every stage of life, and we are here to walk alongside you.
As you turn the calendar this month, consider what “starting anew” might mean for you. Together, let’s embrace the beauty of change and the promise of new beginnings.
