The holiday season is a time for warmth, connection, and giving back — and this year, our community has truly embraced the spirit of the season. From quilts to carols, handmade ornaments to fruit baskets, so many wonderful people have stepped up to bring joy to older adults in our programs.
In November, the ladies of the Schenevus Quarter Inch Quilting Club made more than 200 handmade placemats for participants in our Home Delivered Meal Program. Each one was colorful and unique. The reaction from our older adults was priceless — they absolutely adored them! To show our appreciation, we visited one of the club’s bimonthly meetings with coffee, donuts and heartfelt thanks. We spent the morning laughing, chatting and connecting with this incredible group. Many members have personal ties to Schoharie County, and some even have parents who have been participants in our programs, which inspired their generous donation.
Children from the Middleburgh Advantage Program created adorable, heartfelt cards to accompany this year’s Thanksgiving meal — each one a tiny piece of holiday magic guaranteed to bring smiles to the recipients.
The Schoharie Valley Garden Club also helped brighten the season with beautiful, handcrafted ornaments for Home Delivered Meal participants. This thoughtful group always goes above and beyond — summer flowers, winter holiday gifts and everything in between. Their creations are always well received and appreciated.
Our annual Fruit Basket Collaboration brought together the Salvation Army, the Youth Bureau and local children to spread holiday cheer. The cards included with the fruit were generously donated by Rose Hollow Design. This year, 230 fresh fruit baskets were distributed to older adults across our various programs.
Children from Our Lady of Fatima and Our Lady of the Valley, along with teens in their confirmation and religious education classes, assembled “Blessed Bags” for the homebound as part of a Happy Birthday Jesus celebration — complete with cake and ice cream. What a meaningful and joyful way to give back!
We also extend heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers from The Joshua Project, who help us deliver meals in the village of Middleburgh each Monday through Friday. Their dedication ensures older adults receive nutritious meals and a friendly smile year-round, and we couldn’t do this work without them.
The season wouldn’t be complete without music, and local schoolchildren have stepped in to share their talents. Students from Jefferson Central School performed carols at the Jefferson Community Center, while children from Sharon Springs Central School sang carols at the Silver and Gold Club Day. Nothing lifts spirits quite like the sound of joyful voices echoing through a room. Add cookies and hot chocolate into the mix, and you have the perfect recipe for holiday cheer!
The impact of these efforts is profound. For older adults, these gestures mean more than just a placemat, ornament, card or fruit basket — they are reminders that the community cares, that they are remembered, and that the holiday season is a time for connection and joy. For those who donate or volunteer, the experience of giving back brings its own warmth and satisfaction, reinforcing the bonds that make our community so special. Every act of kindness, big or small, is deeply appreciated and makes a lasting difference.
If you’re inspired to join in, there are plenty of ways to get involved — whether it’s making something special, volunteering your time, or simply sending a kind note. Your participation matters, and the joy you bring will be felt far beyond a single day.
Together, we can make this holiday season brighter, warmer, and filled with the kind of smiles that last long after the decorations come down.
