METHUEN — On Friday, Dec. 1, the second annual Michael P. Ippolito Memorial Event will take place at Methuen High School, with five high school jamboree-style hockey games played between the boys teams from Methuen, Tewksbury, Wilmington and Shawsheen Tech, as well as the Methuen/Tewksbury girls facing off against Shawsheen Tech/Bedford.
The girls game will be the first of the night starting at 4 p.m., followed by the four boys games with Methuen vs. Shawsheen at 5, Wilmington vs. Shawsheen at 6, Tewksbury and Wilmington at 7 and Tewksbury and Methuen at 8. Each game will be three 12-minute periods.
Mike Ippolito was a popular sportswriter for the Wilmington and Tewksbury Town Crier. He spent 20 years at the paper, which included covering the Methuen/Tewksbury girls’ hockey and swim teams. He passed away in September of 2022. He is survived by his wife Lisa and their two boys Michael and Adam.
Last December, the first event was held in his honor, which featured a basketball jamboree. The money raised from that event, as well as this week’s hockey event, will be used for six scholarships divided up to two seniors from each Tewksbury High, Wilmington High and Shawsheen Tech.
Last year’s winners included Kerry Brown and Simon Dunham of Shawsheen Tech, Brooklyn DeGrechie and Michael Sullivan from Tewksbury, and Brett Gallucci and Owen Mitchell from Wilmington.
There will be no admission fee for the hockey event. There will be many gift baskets to be raffled off and several 50-50 raffles with 100 % of the proceeds going to the Michael P. Ippolito Memorial Fund.
